The Circuit Nomads
There are lots of great books out there, like the Gene Scene by Jordan Brown, Nobody’s Perfect by David Fischer and Hurricane Heroes by Thomas Fields-Meyer. But “The Circuit” by Francisco Jiménez is the story of the day; I love how the narrator’s perspective makes the story interesting. While Panchito was working outside in the boiling 100° heat with his brother and father. At school were Panchito had a hard time reading, and lastly when he had to hide from the school bus. These examples all have ways the narrator’s emotions made the story more interesting.
First, in the morning when I'm outside with my Papa doing yard work in the 80° heat, I can only imagine how Panchito felt when he was working in the 100° heat. “I was completely soaked in sweat and my mouth felt as if I had been chewing on a handkerchief (pg.259) said Panchito. While Panchito was outside picking grapes the heat and consumption of water brought him to his knees and made him sick to his stomach till lunch.
Secondly, when I first started school it was a breeze. I could read and write. But for Panchito it was very difficult. On the first day of school Panchito was assigned to a desk and was asked to read. “When I heard this I felt my blood rush to my head; I felt dizzy. “My mouth was dry.” “My eyes began to water”. Nervous emotions kept Panchito from reading and that’s what kept me on the edge of my seat. But I do feel sorrowful for Panchito; he’s in the 6th grade and had a hard time reading. All his life he spent picking grapes, cotton and strawberries.
Lastly, I can wake up in the morning, go school, read and play with my family. But for Panchito and Roberto that was a whole different story. Suddenly I noticed Papa’s face turn pale as he looked down the road. “Here comes the school bus,” he whispered loudly in alarm. Instinctively, Roberto and I ran and hid in the vineyards. We did not want to get in trouble for not going to

I ran out of the garage and towards the field. As I ran I thought to myself it can’t be the end of the season already has it? Once I found Roberto and Papa I saw they were sitting under a tree. I was trying to speak in between panting. I had never run so hard in my life. “Papa is is the end of the season already. I mean it has only been a month.” I said hastily. “I'm sorry but Sullivan can no longer pay us. We must move.” Papa sighed, “I'm sorry Francisco.” Roberto stayed silent and was looking down.I didn’t know how to respond just thinking about all that I would lose during this move saddened me. I no longer would be able to learn the trumpet, no longer be taught English, and I would lose a friend; Mr. Lema.…

A & P written by John Updike is a story that focuses on the development and responsibility that comes with coming of age. It speaks on the reality that the main character, Sammy, must confront when he makes a definitive decision and the consequences that follow. The story takes place in 1961 in a small grocery store called A&P. Sammy, the main character and narrator works as a checker and as he describes the sterile and cycling atmosphere of the store, his life up to that point hadn’t really taken shape until that day. When three girls in bathing suits enter the store Sammy makes a decision that gives him a taste of adulthood and what comes with making decisions. John Updike uses Sammy as an example of the changes that a teenager must go through in order to become an adult. Utilizing Sammy’s changing view of the girls and giving readers Sammy’s thoughts makes it possible to see how his mind in just those few minutes flourishes from a boy to a teenager to an adult and in such must face his action and the effect it brings. Updike gives a condense version of how a mind of an individual develops until reaching adulthood, and how at times the steps taken seem unimportant yet they are crucial in understanding why individuals make the decisions they do.…
