The León family has an unquestionably odd relationship with love. They constantly fail to find the right way to understand and communicate their feelings within a relationship, whether it be with each other or a romantic relationship. In order for them to transgress their sentiment, they may in some cases use tough love. On the other hand, they themselves will be subjected to much worse devices, such as violence. Like most people, they yearn for tenderness in the simplest of means but more often than not can not find it. The fragility of their bonds often mixes with the mysterious underlying curse lurking their family, internally and externally-fukú.

Although they are not bonded in the same way a ‘typical’ family is, which is evident in the relationship between La Inca and Beli, they do care for one another. However, they often demonstrate it through tough love. It’s shown by Oscar’s abuela, “[giving] him shit, [telling] him that not even God loves a puta” (286) when the family becomes aware of his love for Ybon. But the most evident case of this is between Beli and Lola. Lola constantly faces feelings of wanting to run away, even struggling to do so when she finds the courage to do so literally. Although her mother appears to be hurt as she runs out the door, she turns around and realizes that “[Beli] hadn’t been crying… She’d been faking! Her smile was like a lion’s” (70). Very early on in her life, Beli experiences feelings of escape due to having a rough start. It seems natural that Beli wants to shackle Lola down since she struggles to ‘break away’ herself when she is young.
