Literary Pilgrim Progresses To The Past
For this week’s reading journal, I have chosen to write about the three readings that were the most complex to discuss. Although I really enjoyed poetic memoir in Surrendering by Ocean Vuong and the story of family development in Cisneros’ Ghosts and Voices, I found my responses to the other three readings were more important to discuss.

In Alibis’ A Literary Pilgrim Progresses to the Past, I found that as someone who has continually tried their hand at writing, I really connected to this reading. I completely understand that it’s very difficult to discover what distinguishes you from others. Sometimes even when you have discovered what makes you a unique author, it can be something you consciously or subconsciously conceal because to reveal is to reveal a very vulnerable party of yourself. I really loved this author’s style of writing because of how it draws the reader in using anecdotes and descriptive scenes.

One of the readings, I found very choppy and difficult to fully comprehend. That was Jay’s Discipline. Although I did have trouble getting engaged in the reading, one of the main quotes about globalization helping map the future of literary studies helped me to comprehend that the way other cultures are perceived or the way nation states work alongside each other can be observed through

The words will wash over you and create an entire realm of emotion, sound and pauses that can seem to last a lifetime. That is what I understand from this piece by Hisham Mattar, titled The Book. I really enjoyed how much the author put the core of his identity in to this piece, and how readers can really put themselves into his shoes. Almost every child will have a book read to them at a certain point that shapes their imaginative state and can carry them onwards to a streamline for certain genres of books or articles later on in

An authors values and ideas originate and stem from their personal, historical and cultural context. By comparing the two authors Tim Winton (from an Australian context) and Zohra Saed (Afghani/New York context) we are able to see how similar values are shaped through identity/contex. Winton uses various literary techniques to embed personalised values into his texts such as place, family, and identity in “Big World”, 2005 and “The Turning”, 2005. Zohra Saed has implanted her values of culture, family, memory and identity into “What the Scar Revealed” and “Nomad’s Market: Flushing Queens” (both published in 2003) through poetic techniques. Both authors represent the value of freedom within juxtaposing setting and place, and how these values build your identity.…

Books, they take you on a journey. A journey of fear, hope, adventure, love and sadness. Some books are fiction, and others take you on a real adventure where things that seem completely fake are real. They take us away from our air conditioned, comfortable homes and take us to a completely different place; one of those books are A Long Walk to Water (Linda Sue Park). Some other books have real world problem but is a made up story, one of these books are Rules (Cynthia Lord). These books are extremely different, but in many ways they’re the same.…

Throughout this term, we have read emotional, powerful, and legendary literary works that have been passed down generations. These stories consist of The Epic of Gilgamesh; which the king of Uruk must endure a life-changing experience, the book of Job; where an upright man who loved God is put in a battle that questions his faith, and The Odyssey; a man goes through a long journey to return home to his family.…

Story telling about a person’s life can be a good way to illustrate a point, a technique which has been used throughout human history. Authors such as Judith Ortiz Cofer, in her essay The myth of the Latin woman: I just met a girl named Maria, and David Sedaris in his essay I Like Guys, use narrative to argue their thesis, however this is not limited only to established authors. With the pair of essays written by Cofer and Sedaris (and a little story of my own) a reader can see how the use of narration describing events in an author’s life can be used to argue a point.…

While most kids had the enjoyment of having their parents read to them at night, close to their parents and slowly drifting off to sleep, I never had that experience. My parents didn’t teach me to speak English, let alone read it to me. So, while I was growing up it was a struggle for me to have the thrill of traveling in a magical school bus, saying Goodnight to the moon or even ignoring the man with the yellow hat. I wasn’t so deep into books, I never knew they could take you out of reality and let you escape your mind while you go on an adventure.…

The sound repetition makes it easier to memorize the stories. When the child can remember the words they feel like they are reading. Both child and parents know they only memorized it, but the child's confidence is boosted, and then next time the challenge of reading will be easier. The illustrations in the stories also help children learn to read. Most stories have made up words to follow the wacky rhyming patterns. These words can often not be understood by child or parent making the child, again, feel confident about reading. The illustrations can help the children figure out the word they do not know.In all of his works the illustrations create metaphors. Some of the best examples are back to his famous story, And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street. When the child is traveling to school, he is carrying a large book that looks uncomfortable. This represents the child not enjoying…

In the past six weeks, I have learned that when reading critically I need to take my time, and take a step back from the obvious, to fully understand the purpose of the author's tone and word choice. In addition, I’ve learned to expand my mind when it comes to the different types of writing styles. Not all authors are straightforward, some are more complex. That level of complexity can come from the day to day life the author lives. Your life can play a big role in what you put on paper and they way you put it. While reading, it is also important to consider everything that you have read before you can come to a conclusion for the reasons why the author shared the certain things that they have…

Both books, The Time Traveler and the Travelers Gift, have to do with man's curiosity of time travel. Both these books are a great read and get you thinking, "Would time travel really be possible, and could I see man evolve throughout history to where we are today?" As a Christian, I don't personally believe in evolution in general. I also don't think humans evolved from a lower life form and I don't think we will be here for another million years to eventually evolve into something else. Even though both books weren't meant to be written from religious views, one could still learn a few things by observing them from a Christian viewpoint.…
