In the poem “On The Subway” the narrator contrasts the portraits of herself and the man sitting in the opposite side of her. She contrasts both by telling the difference between their lifestyles, the way they're dressed, look, and race. She uses the literary techniques tone and imagery to contrast.
The writer uses tone in the poem during her comparison to show her fear. In the poem when she describes the man's appearance she goes on talking about how the man could take her coat and her life. While describing the man she gives off a scared tone as she tells how menacing the man looks. In her comparisons she uses the fearful tone to show how menacing this man is to her.
The writer also uses imagery in her comparison.
