Literary Techniques Used In Popular Mechanics By Raymond Carver
Popular mechanics is a short story that uses common objects, but precise language. The quote that I chose above was written by the same author who wrote popular mechanics. From the beginning, Raymond Carver starts the story with “Early that day the weather turned and the snow was melting into dirty water”. He doesn’t say in plain text that the story involves conflict, but the words he uses are very specific details to what is happening. This quotes applies to this short story because the author takes a normal or common couple fighting and turns it into something powerful. There are certain things throughout the story that can be used as symbolism. Carver quotes “In the scuffle they knocked down a flower pot that hung behind the stove”. …show more content…
Anyone could face their situation. Carver made it to where you could put your own name in the story. He is very descriptive of where the couple is pulling on the baby. The couple believe that they are not hurting the baby, yet are. Everything they are doing is affecting their baby. It seems as if they do not even care for the child. They only care to prove who can have the baby. They continue to only think of themselves and not about their child. This situation is very common in today's society as well and not just a made up story. This conflict is universal to all people. Kids are forced to be put in the middle of their parents issues. They are strained to chose between one another. The story was originally called ‘Mine”. Which makes perfect sense because the characters don't see the baby as a person, but as an object.
Raymond Carver uses a comprehensive last sentence. He states “In this manner, the issue was decided”. In just seven words he ends the story in a horrific but non surprising way. We all know the baby is going to face problems ahead, but we didn’t see his death happening, yet were not surprised either. I named the title of this essay ‘Short Sentence”, because of the short sentences throughout the story, and most importantly because the baby faces a short sentence. Not only did the parents put their needs before the child's, their child was hurt in the process.

In relationships, there is the heart-broken and the heart-breaker. In this case, the woman is the heart-breaker. She shows her desperation in the beginning where she bawls, “I’m glad you’re leaving! I’m glad you’re leaving!” The man only wishes to keep the baby to savor the past although doing so in an aggressive manner. The baby is the pinnacle of their bond. In other words, the baby is a metaphor that symbolizes their past. They don’t mind for the safety of their child because it is non-existent. They only wish for the memory to…

Bradstreet uses motherly language and words with a protective connotation in describing her “child” in order to reveal the speaker’s admiration and hopes for him or her. Though the speaker describes her child in the poem as “ill-formed,” suggesting that the child is defective, she comments that the child “did’st by my side remain,” indicating that she appreciates the child and does not disown it, regardless of its flaws. When describing the revealing of the child to the world, Bradstreet uses the word “snatched,” suggesting that the child was “exposed to public view” without the speaker’s wanting this. In describing how the mother holds her child by her side and suggesting that she resents its being “exposed,” Bradstreet depicts the love with which a writer holds his or…

The first example of symbolism that Tobias Wolff gives us is the setting of the story. Implied by the stories title the setting is a snowy forest. The snow, being so cold, is symbolic of the cold relationship that the three hunters; Tub, Frank and Kenny all share with each other. Frank and Tub, once used to be very close, but Frank now has a more close relationship with Kenny but even that friendship is not without its taunting and antagonizing. This is made clear when after Frank tells Kenny that he talks to much, Kenny Says “I won't say a word. Like I won't say…

As someone reads, it is likely that they witness symbolism. Whether they notice or not is to be determined. Symbolism may serve a greater propose then it seem and it might even foreshadow a certain feeling or event. In the play “A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry, there are many examples of symbolism. In this play, sunshine, Mama’s “raggedy-looking” plant, and the new house represent the characters’ happiness, relationship, and hope.…

Symbolism is something that is plentiful in To Kill A Mockingbird. There are at least five mockingbirds throughout the book, even though I didn't list all of them in my essay. There is a clear theme throughout the story. It is Man vs Society. That is symbolized by the Tom Robinson trial…

Symbolism is used by the narrator to develop the theme. The mahogany coffin contains a symbol used to represent the theme of life and death. The narrator states, " One day I took him up to the barns loft and showed him his casket, telling him how we all had believed he would die." The coffin represents death, as the narrator points out. Doodle and his disabilities are symbolic to the…

How It Was” Hope Edelman, the author, presents the argument that she has to take on more than half the responsibilities since the father is not home or able to help as much as she yearns for. So instead of talking with her husband she lashes out and snaps, unthinkingly, and so her husband misunderstands. Edelman presents a lot of hypocritical points when explaining her evidence. She blames everything on him, has a cold attitude about the situation the whole time, and then comes back with a happy ending story about how she forgave him and things are better now. “He came home from work in time for dinner. He sat at the kitchen table once a month and paid bills. And, on weekend trips he would drive the car.” (Edelman 52). This is an explanation of how she feels toward the beginning of the article and then how she has a quickly changed turn around in the ending parts of the article. “What really matters now… is that John is home before Maya’s bedtime almost every night no…” (Edelman 57). She has well written supporting evidence about how she feels, and very many examples to back her up. Although, her tone about the whole situation is very unclear, and makes you confused at some points in the article making you ask yourself if she’s sure about what she really wants in her…

There are three main types of symbolism that are appealing to the eye. The first quote uses the prairie as a symbol of Jim’s friendship with Antonia during his childhood. It may also symbolize the immigrants and the vast size of the prairie. Which may suggest both the opportunity for a new life and the overwhelming fear that goes with trying to create a new life. The third quote is usually missed as a sign of symbolism. The gravesite is a remnant of the prairie in its…

Symbolism is a way an author gives a reader the ability to interpret the story. Symbolism is heavily used in “A Jury of Her Peers” to describe the relationship and characterization of Mrs. and Mr. Wright. The broken stove is a representation of neglect with Mr. Wright, and for Mrs. Wright her decline since her marriage. The birdcage is a representation of life for both Mrs. and Mr. Wright. Mrs. Wright is trapped and Mr. Wright is the cage. The bird represent the joy Mrs. Wright wants and use to have, and for Mr. Wright it represents his cruelty and abuse. The symbolism of Mrs. and Mr. Wright in “A Jury of Her Peers” represents the oppression of women by men.…

Another example of symbolism is the blind folded boxing in the story, which symbolizes the blind hatred of blacks. By blind hatred, I mean the ignorance of the people of the time who could hate a person for the color of their skin. The boxers in the ring wailed at each other, not knowing whom they were hitting or why, just that they had to fight. The narrator declares that "blindfolded, I could no longer control my motions. I had no dignity. I stumbled about like a baby or a drunken man"(331). This was true in the white American society of the time because they didn't know the black people, they blindly sent blows of segregation without actually knowing each individual, but stereotyped a whole race as no good and as lesser…

Another aspic of A Rose for Emily is symbolism. Even though it is said that “Faulkner himself disowned symbolic readings” (Kelly, 155) there are a few symbolic elements intertwined in this great mystery. It is ironic that Faulkner disowned symbolic readings, yet the overall story of A Rose for Emily is said to be symbolic. “Nearly all critics think Emily symbolizes the decay of the old order, the dissolution of the Southern aristocracy.” (Kelly, 155).…

As I read the short story, “Popular Mechanics” by Raymond Carver I learned that the small things in life matter the most. As I read on, towards the end of the story, the two, now divorced, parents were arguing over a baby. The baby would have ended up dying because it was held under the arm and near the shoulder by the father, “he felt the baby slipping... he pulled back very hard”(2).…

Ernest Hemingway is known for his sparse style of writing. In “Hills Like White Elephants” his style of writing is just that. “Hills Like White Elephants” exemplifies his style of writing along with a detailed description of the scenery and intense dialogue between the two main characters, the American man and Jig, throughout the story. Hemingway’s writing style, use of description, and dialogue enables the reader to figure out just what the man and the woman, Jig, are discussing.…
