21 November 2015 Symbolism in TKAM Symbolism plays a huge part in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. A mockingbird is a form of symbolism that can describe many of the characters in this book. The county of Maycomb and Boo Radley are other examples of symbolism. In TKAM, Maycomb, Boo Radley, and the mockingbirds are all used by Harper Lee to either foreshadow or symbolize something In TKAM, the mockingbird is the most recognizable form of symbolism in the book. Maycomb and the trail represent the main conflict in the story: Man vs. Society. During this time period, the equal rights movement is just beginning, so blacks are still being discriminated against. Tom Robinson is being discriminated against because he is black."Any black man would rape a white woman if he had the chance." That is the whole reason for their case. Despite Atticus' compelling evidence, they still lose. The society around them just can't imagine a white person doing this to another white person. Boo Radley was in a similar position. Everyone looks at Boo as a monster. Jem describes him how she imagines him,"He's 6 foot and a half...dines on raw squirrels and cats because his hands are bloodstained...there was a long scar across his face...and he drools all the time." She pretty much described him as a zombie. No one treated him as a human until he saved Jem and Scout's lives. Then they began to understand Boo, and why he was always in his house. Society doesn't forget the past unless something is done about it. Tom couldn't change society's perspective on him, but Boo could. Symbolism is something that is plentiful in To Kill A Mockingbird. There are at least five mockingbirds throughout the book, even though I didn't list all of them in my essay. There is a clear theme throughout the story. It is Man vs Society. That is symbolized by the Tom Robinson trial

The mockingbird may have only been mentioned once, but is played a very important role throughout the entire book. It symbolized many different things, but mainly innocence. Lee uses the bird to symbolize many different characters, all because of its meaning. ““Remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” That was the only time I ever heard Atticus say it was a sin to do something, and I asked Miss Maudie about it. “Your father’s right.” she said. “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy...but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird””(Lee 119).The only time Atticus told Scout something was a sin is when she is going to harm an innocent being. You can not kill something that has done nothing wrong.”The analogy between the senseless slaughter of innocent songbirds and Tom;s tragic death becomes clear to Scout”(Zaidman). Tom Robinson was someone that was innocent, but the killed him for his sweet song. “...the title of a novel, students should know, often points to one of its key themes and this is obviously the case in To Kill a Mockingbird. Mockingbirds are mentioned in several places throughout the book, often in key scenes. Best of all, the tracing of this motif will reveal clearly to the students that Tom Robinson is not the only mockingbird in the novel” (Schuster). There are many different symbols in To Kill a Mockingbird, the the most important is the…

Symbols are the key components in a story because it takes the work and adds another dimension that writing without symbols do not have. They conceal a deeper meaning and understanding in contemplation of extending the story beyond the imagination. Additionally, they often represent ideas that relate to the theme without the author implying it in the text, which allows the reader to reflect and interpret the writer’s viewpoint. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee skillfully demonstrates how society can impact a character based on class and identity by applying symbols like a mockingbird to represent innocent individuals who do no harm…

Racial discrimination is easily the most prominent type of discrimination within the novel. The reader mostly sees this through the character of Tom Robinson, who is wrongly accused on charges of rape and assault. Through the use of this character, in combination with various literary techniques, Harper Lee holds up a mirror and makes us assess our own beliefs of discrimination and prejudice. Techniques such as symbolism are used by Lee to portray the possible dangers of discrimination and prejudice. Symbolism within the novel is mainly used to portray Tomʼs innocence. The main example of symbolism is the mockingbird. Mockingbirds first appear in the novel when Jem and Scout are learning to use their new air rifles, where Atticus gives them one rule to follow - “Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." Miss Maudie also noted “Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corncribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird.” From this, we can gather that mockingbirds are harmless, innocent creatures, and killing them is wrong as they donʼt hurt anyone. This is symbolic of Tom…

One of the major symbols in the book, comes from its title, To Kill a Mockingbird. It is taken from a scene in the book where Atticus Finch gives his children air rifles for Christmas. He tells them that they are free to shoot other birds, such as bluejays, if they wish, “but remember,” he says, “it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” Their neighbor, Miss Maudie, co-signs Atticus, saying “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but music for us to enjoy... That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird” (Lee 103). This may seem meaningless at first, however there is a deeper, symbolic meaning behind it. According to Adam Smykowski, “The bluejays represent the prejudiced ‘bullies’ of Maycomb County, such as, Bob Ewell.” He continues, “Mockingbirds are innocent, and all they do is sing beautiful songs. They would not harm anyone.” There are several ‘mockingbirds’ in the story, the most prominent one being Tom Robinson, and black people in general. They are innocent, meanwhile, the bullies like Bob Ewell (and other racist whites) take advantage of them (Smykowski 56).…

In To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, many characters are employed to become symbols for themes. For example, Dolphus Raymond, the town drunkard an interracial relationship, is used to represent the theme of “appearance versus reality”. Generally, the people of Maycomb viewed Raymond as a drunkard heathen who had committed an act against god by marrying and starting a family with a black woman, In accordance with the racist views of the time, Raymond had committed a horrible atrocity, and the people of the town could not fathom how a reasonable, sober white man would dare to associate with a woman of color in such a fashion.-…

In a way it symbolizes that people are like mockingbirds they do good but don’t get credit, lose a battle or end up losing anyway. Jem, Scout, and Atticus represent Mockingbirds to me because they did their best to do good but it just didn’t work…
