Literature: Power of Emotion
B. “All literature shows us the power of emotion. It is emotion, not reason that motivates characters in literature.” – Duff Brenna. Using TWO characters we studied this semester (they may NOT be from the same play) discuss whether it is indeed emotion that motivates them in action and in thought.
In Antigone by Sophcles, and in macbeth by shakespeare, we see that both antigone and macebth act and think out of emotion, macbeth wants to be king of scotland very badly, and kills many people to get this position, antigone wants to bury her brother because she thinks it the right and moral thing to do, she does this even though knowing that she will probably get killed. we see that both these characters act out of emotion, antigone out of good reasoning, and the macbeth out of thirst for power.
