Little Red Riding Hood Comparison
Little Red Riding Hood is the classic tale of wolves, grandmothers, and why it isn’t a good idea to mix the two. As nearly anybody could tell you, the story starts with Little Red going to visit her poor, sick grandmother. However, she is beat to her grandmother’s house by a cunning wolf, attacked by said wolf, and is saved by the heroic Huntsman, who happens to stumble upon the cottage at a very convenient time. But, like any story that has stood the test of time, it has been changed slightly to adapt to the changing social norms. Although the plot of the story has remained unchanged, some of the more questionable aspects of the original story were redacted and changed in later iterations of the tale. However, each rendition has included many common similarities as …show more content…
Today, the two most prevalent versions of Little Red Riding Hood are the modern day version, for obvious reasons, and the original version written by the Brothers Grimm, and after reading both, one main similarity and one main difference are clearly present. The modern tale of Little Red Riding Hood is very similar to the original in terms of central theme and plot, but it is very different …show more content…
They are always changed in ways that the new author sees fit, and these changes mostly occur to keep the story up to date with the ever changing expectations of stories. But, as seen in the story of Little Red Riding Hood, these changes do not alter what the original author intended. The central theme of a story typically remains unchanged throughout the story’s lifetime, and most changes are cosmetic. Most cosmetic changes to older stories include the removal of violent imagery that would traumatize most children today. In the case of Little Red Riding Hood, the modern version stays true to the Grimm Brother’s intentions for the story, however certain more violent sequences have been taken out for the sake of their classification as children’s

The Grimm Brothers describe Little Red Cap forcing the wolf “down the roof” with the smell of sausage, and consequentially drowning in the trough (Tatar 16). “Little Dread Riding Hood” portrays that heroic scene by designing a presumably older little red riding hood riding a wolf as though it was a horse. This domestication, or possibly dead body, of the wolf into a play toy demonstrations how little red riding hood matures, and is able to defend herself against the wolf rather than relying on someone else, the huntsman, to save…

Many short stories have been written throughout time. Many are just for entertainment, but many of them are for teaching a lesson. Little Red Riding Hood was written partly to teach a lesson. In France, a girl that loses her virginity is said to have “seen a wolf.” That is what this story is based on. Little Red Riding Hood is about a little girl that runs in to a wolf in the forest as she is on her way to her grandmother’s house. Her grandmother was ill and her mother baked some food to make her feel better, in which Little Red Riding Hood was taking to her grandmother. When she met the wolf, the wolf was thinking he did not want to attack the girl because there were workers in the area and he did not want there to be any witnesses. Therefore, the wolf gained the trust of the little girl in just a short time so he can learn where the grandmother lived. The little girl, being naïve, gave the location of her grandmother’s house to the wolf. The end result was the death of the grandmother and the little girl because the wolf ate both of them.…

Red is a daring, adventurous, intelligent, assertive and ambitious young girl who delivers cookies and sweets all on her own throughout the forest. Overall, she is strong, independent and even knows karate and basic self-defence which gives her the ability to defend herself against the wolf that approaches her in the forest. Just like Red, who isn’t like other stereotypical young girls, Granny isn’t like your typical grandmother. She has a tattoo on her neck and lives her life on the edge. Not only does she bake the best cakes in the forest but she also does extreme sports and is independent. Unlike the original story, the Woodcutter isn’t the saviour of this story. Credit for saving little Red actually goes to Granny who saved her from the goodie recipe stealing bunny. The woodcutter just happened to be at the scene when the wolf attacks Granny. This links back into today’s context as this generation is all about the empowerment of women. In society today, women are proving that they aren’t just useful for cooking and cleaning but they can save themselves and can be just as strong as any man. Women can be saviours and heroes who save the world just like any man. As shown in Hoodwinked, men don’t always have to be the strong, manly heroes who save the day. Men can be sensitive and have dreams but that doesn’t make them any less of a man or girly. It makes them who they are. It proves that you don’t have to be put into…

For my Rhetoric-In-Practice (RIP), I decided to write fracture fairy tales on "Hansel and Gretel", "The Little Red Riding Hood" and "The Ugly Duckling". I take upon the role of Rory Madden, an experienced children's author promoting his newest book The Modernize Collection of Fairy Tales on his website. In my book, each fairy tale is revamped to target a modern audience and to address a specific issue with children and modern technology. My collection of fairy tales targets two audiences, my primary audience is third and fourth graders; meanwhile, my secondary audience is parents.…

As Bettelheim reasoned, the child can identify with the good character, not because he values goodness per se, but because he identifies with the situation the character is placed in and wants to see her escape or triumph. Nevertheless, the morality of the situation is not lost on the child and he or she learns to value good over evil. In Charles Perrault’s version of Little Red Riding Hood, we are introduced to the main character portrayed as an innocent girl living in a small village. As was stated by Perrault, “Once upon a time there lived in a certain village a little country girl”(Perrault 63). This quote shows the presence of the simply drawn character Bettelheim looks for in a successful fairy tale. In the Grimm Brother’s version of Little Red Cap, the reader is once more introduced to what is believed to be a sweet innocent girl also living in a village. As was stated by Grimm, “Once upon a time there was a sweet little girl”(Grimm 65). Both stories although both having different tones, contain the same aspect that is needed for a story to qualify as a fairy tale according to Bettelheim, simply drawn characters. Although Perrault’s version is more friendly compared to the more darker version of the Grimm Brothers’, both contain simply drawn characters in…

Art falls under the umbrella of literature, allowing it to be crucial part of how literature is viewed and analyzed, whether it is critiquing the text or providing a deeper meaning for the text. Hence, Sharon Singer’s paintings of well-known fairy tales function as literary comments and critiques of those stories. In Singer’s image of little red riding hood, named “Little Dread Riding Hood”, there is a vital part that depicts Dread wearing or riding the wolf. Arguably, the skates Dread wears signify she is probably riding the wolf, as though he is a “hobby horse” (Zipes 2). However, whether she is wearing or riding the wolf, she is using his body, mirroring the version of the famous fairy tale by Roald Dohl when Little Red Riding Hood kills…

The author of “Lon Po Po” states “When the wolf reached out, he could almost touch the highest branch. But at that moment, shang coughed, and they let go of the rope, and the basket fell down and down and down. Not only did the wolf bump his head, but he broke his heart to pieces.” This passage from “Lon Po Po” shows that the wolf dies in the children’s hands. The author of “Red Riding Hood” writes, and he gobbled her right up “Having enjoyed such a heavy meal he was soon snoring away. A hunter passing by was alarmed by the frightful racket. “That doesn't sound like granny,” he said. And so the brave hunter jumped in the window killed the sleeping wolf.” this excerpt shows that The wolf died in the hunter’s hands instead of in the children’s hands. It is clear that there are many differences between the two short stories “Lon Po Po”, and “Little Red Riding…

The fairy tales that we grew up with are not the originals. Disney and the brothers Grimm had two very different versions. While many of us grew up watching cute birds and mice following the woe begotten princess, the original stories were forgotten by most. These stories were far darker, ending in cruel justice for a stepsister or worse. The difference between aspects of the two tales discussed, in some instances, is the difference between night and day. Grimm fairy tales contain more violence, harsher villains, and swifter justice.…

I decided to rewrite the story of “Little Red Riding Hood” because it seemed very fitting in relation to my topic of rape. In the story, Little Red is tricked by a wolf into taking off her red hood that protects her from wolves. She is then attacked by the wolf, and afterwards she runs to the village begging for help. Unfortunately no one will help her; they give the responses countless give to victims of sexual assault, and so Little Red cries. Then a hunter decides to help her and teaches her how to defend herself, they kill the wolf and Little Red is never a victim again. However, unlike this story, most rape victims never receive a happy ending, and never receive justice.…

Carter herself says that ‘All the mythic versions of women, from the myth of the redeeming purity of the virgin to that of the healing reconciling mother, are consolatory nonsense.’ It is clear that Carter believes in the reinvention of the typical woman - however she does not believe in the retelling of these stories, but rather 'to extract the latent content from the traditional stories and to use it as the beginnings of new stories'. The Company of Wolves converts the classic character of Perrault’s Little Red Riding Hood from a naïve, gullible and helpless young girl to a ‘strong-minded child’ who has an awareness of the world around her while possessing the innocence and purity of a young woman also.…

Mallet states that little red riding hood shares similar trait with her grandma and mother that they are women without men and show they haven’t conduct sexual relationship for a long time. The kinship between them reveals psychoanalytic criticism that one’s action is resulting from another one’s unconscious desire. The mother is the daughter of the grandma, and little red riding hood is the daughter of the mother where each of them carries expectations from their mothers. From the text, it mentions "Indirectly, Red Riding Hood's mother satisfies some of her sexual needs in the character of the grandmother. But, in addition, the mother seeks vicarious fulfillment through her daughter, with whom she identifies herself" (Mallet 9). The father of little red riding hood never appears in Perrault's version of the story which implies to the loneliness from the mother. The wolf eats the grandma who shows her satisfaction of sex from man and fulfillment of her daughter's sexual need from the absence of a husband. The grandma and the mother are each other’s second identities that they share feelings, and one of them accomplishes action can fill up another’s needs. Similarly, little red riding hood shares the bond with her mother, and she carries her mother's expectation of attracting the wolf. According to the text, it mentions "...the one expressed in words, to "walk decently" and stay out of trouble, and the underlying, unspoken message, to go out and seduce the wolf of her mother's vicarious pleasure" (Mallet 9-11). The author suggests little red riding hood's conflict with self and her mother is her another side of self that wants her to experience the sex. Little red riding hood's experience in sex is same as her mother having sex with the wolf in the little girl's body. The expression of the superego,…

Fairytales. When we hear or see that calming word, we automatically think of beautiful expensive ball gowns, charming handsome Princes, pumpkins turning into carriages, and the infamous ending of true loves first kiss. When growing up, many of us had these wonderful tales read to us before bed or at school with all of our friends. Fairytales, having been around for centuries, sends all kinds of important moral messages from being a child to facing the ‘beautiful’ world of adulthood. Growing up and being placed in the adult world, we come to terms that fairytales aren’t the classic stories of Little Red Riding Hood, Briar Rose, or Cinderella that we all know and love, its much more than that. We are surrounded by Fairytales, almost as if they…

Little Red is obviously a generous and sweet girl, where as Goldilocks’ is not caring for what she does. The differences between the stories isn't much but there characters differ a lot. The once innocent moral tale used to teach little girls a lesson has developed into many convoluted adaptations that apply some of modern societies most problematic issues. Both the Perrault and Grimm version of Little Red Riding Hood both point out the consequences of straying of the path. While Perrault’s Little Red Riding Hood ends with the wolf having eaten the innocent little girl, Grimm’s Little Red Cap has a hero who swoops in to save her and grandma. The movie, Freeway (1996) directed by Matthew Bright, subverts qualities found in the fairytales and puts a modern twist on it. Vanessa Lutts, our new Little Red Riding Hood, strays of the path, saves herself, and is definitely not the innocent little girl that Grimm and Perrault imagined;…
