The author uses this symbol to represent how the man and woman’s relationship is torn apart as well. As the author concludes his story he states, “But he would not let go. He felt the baby slipping out of his hands and he pulled back very hard. In this manner, the issue was decided”(Carver 1) Assuming by the quote that the baby is ripped in half, one can see that the equivalent damage has been done to the couple’s relationship.
