In schools there are many factors that come to play when determining how and what you are learning. Parental involvement helps because it motivates a child to take their work seriously to keep them on their toes, but it is not necessary. Students could go through school by themselves with their own motivation; they believe they could work hard, they believe they will succeed, they believe in the future that lies ahead of them, they believe in themselves, so they will do whatever they can to achieve that, but this is not always the case for every student. During my early years of education, school was a bit more challenging for me than the average student. Consistently my performance appeared below expectations and I lacked the ability to comprehend information as quickly and efficiently as other students. Our brains tend to avoid thinking, which makes it unlikely for us to like thinking. But apparently our brains release some amount of dopamine when there are cases of ‘successful thinking’. Does it not seem that nowadays the concept of achieving good grades seems foreign to our generation? Most teenagers seem to be content with just a ‘D’, as long as it means “being able to get the heck out of here.” Never giving it their all, letting opportunities to aim higher melt away like snowflakes hitting bare concrete. Grade retention is a very difficult and emotionally charged decision. It may be considered when a child has significant struggles making progress in reading, writing or math, fails to reach performance levels expected for promotion to the next grade and last but not lease appears to be immature and young for her age. In many schools today, tests are being used to determine whether a child will go on to the next grade or repeat the same grade. Grade retention, better known as "staying back", "being held back" or "repeating", has been the topic of much debate within the educational system. The controversy which surrounds this long-standing issue has been reinforced by such topics as the recent endorsement of academic standards. Research indicates that "the rate of retention has increased by approximately 40% in the last 20 years with as many as 15% of all American students held back each year and 30-50% held back at least once before ninth grade" (Dawson, 1998). These discouraging statistics pose copious problems within a school system.
