Local Airline Industry-5 Forces of Porter
Local Industry-Air line Industry

Air Lines: PIA, Air Blue, Shaheen and Aero Asia.
Competition rivalry within the industry:
There is little competition in the local routes between the airlines of Pakistan. But PIA still holds monopoly over its rival because of its strong market position and strong support by the government. Although in the international routes PIA faces tough competition from the rest of the air lines.

Threats of new entrants:
There is low threat of new entrants in this industry, because it needs huge investments and because of the economic condition no one will invest in the airline industry of Pakistan. Although there was an article in the news paper that a new air line is coming soon in Pakistan which is Air Indus, but it is still just a rumour.
Threat of substitute :
There are few threats of substitute of air lines on the local level as some people would prefer the substitute of PIA like Air blue, Shaheen and Aero Asia in the local routes because of their affordable rates. In the international routes PIA have many foreign substitute air lines. Bargaining power of customers:
Because of low competition in the market there is no bargaining power of customer in the industry. Air lines are charging high fares especially PIA because of its strong monopoly.

Bargaining power of suppliers:
In this industry bargaining power of supplier is more than customer because there are no specific rules and regulations from government side that’s air line companies are charging too much from customers.

In Airlines Industry, The threat of new entrants is low. Firstly, Even though the switching costs are low between different brands of Airline, consumers are more likely to select well-known names of Airline companies because worth-of-month is importantly affecting Airline companies and safety is the first thing customers will consider. Since the ticket of Airline are usually expensive, customers would not give their money to the firms they do not trust. If a new firm plan to enter this industry, they need to firstly become licensed which may take more than one year, and after that they will be constantly being regulated by different organizations like the Federal Aviation Administration and the Department of Transportation. All the time and cost spend to create a new airline company is enough to stop most of the new entrants from getting into this industry.…

An important point about an airline’s cost structure, and a key to understanding the nature of competition in the industry, is that once an airline has set its schedule, nearly all of its costs are fixed and thus cannot be avoided. Because it is better to generate cash flow to cover some fixed costs, as opposed to none at all, an airline will be willing to fly passengers at prices far below its average total cost. This implies that the incidence of price wars during periods of low demand is likely to be greater in this industry than in…

Competition started when Indigo entered the market with the lowest price – as the low cost carrier. Already airlines industry was on the edge of bust era. There were bigger players like Jet Airways, Air India etc. Recently we saw Spice jet decreasing price as “10 lakh seats at an all-inclusive fare of Rs 2,013 for any domestic flight between February 1 and April 30”,and there was a dramatic change in the price of Jet Airways, which usually doesn’t prefer change in prices – that is if we see history, whenever Indigo has changed the price we couldn’t see any price change factor or reaction as of price change from Jet Airways – so this comes to stay competitive in the market by decreasing price by “Jet Airways is offering the 20 lakh seats on over 450 domestic flights across 57 destinations operated by it and JetKonnect” . We can see excerpt from the daily news paper stating price…
