Ed Barclay, local parental expert. In his lifetime Ed and his late wife raised about 47 kids including five of their own. Every single one of these kids was raised in the couple’s 1950’s home in Lawrence, NJ. He says he was encouraged by the church where they told him about suffering kids.
In his childhood, Ed lived in Lawrence, NJ. His father was a baker and what was known as an air raid warden. Ed graduated in 1943, and enlisted instead of being drafted into the military. He served and came back home to family where he quickly married his cinderella. Pretty much everyone of these kids had some sort of problem. Ed remembers having to go into school because one of his foster children cussed at the teacher. In their meeting with the principal, she tried to argue that he was being unfair, and Ed said to her, “You still should never cuss at a teacher, or anyone for that matter.” Ed explains that he had lots of teaching moments with his kids and that he did his best to take every single one. Ed says, “The teaching moments are there, you just have to know when to take it and when to leave it.” All of the kids got along as well as every other family, with just a few mishaps. The older kids helped to take care of the new fostered kids and this really helped out Ed and his wife. Everything got blamed on the little boys when they shared rooms. A lamp broke in the attic, which was the boys room at the time, of course it was Al, the youngest one of Ed’s actual children’s fault. Because of this, Ed remembers giving Al a spanking without knowing exactly who broke the lamp. When he found out later that it wasn’t Al, he let Al give him a spanking to make it right. This proved useful, all the boys got a laugh out of it and everyone ended happily. Ed has parental experience like Bill Gates has money.
