Fast Food Nation and Food Inc. were works that truly reveled something that I was completely blind to. I had always known that McDonalds and other fast food chains were of course unhealthy, but was unaware of the things that that these big corporations were hiding from the consumers. This information I acquired about how fast food chains really worked completely changed my mind set and was an enormous eye opener. After learning about this I started thinking about local producers and the benefits of overall eating locally. I came to realize that eating locally is not only extremely healthy and better for you, but also is a great help to local farmers and the community. This is my explanation as to why fast food is no longer something I will eat, and how local food is overall a better option. In the movie Food Inc. there was lots of information given on how fast food corporations such as, McDonalds and Tyson Chicken raise their animals and make their food. This completely disgusted me and was something that I hadn’t known until watching this in our class. A quote from Fast Food Nation stated, “They soon developed a new breed of chicken to facilitate the production of McNuggets. Dubbed “Mr. McDonald, the new breed had unusually large breasts”(140). These corporations get farmers to raise generically altered chickens whose breasts are bigger so that they will have more meat to use. These chickens are held in huge coops with thousands of other chickens. What really astonished me was that these genetically altered chickens can hardly walk due to how their breasts are almost twice the size of their bodies. All they do is eat and sit around in their feces all day. When the chickens get big enough they are slaughtered and moved on to be made in to the food you eat at McDonald’s, but it doesn’t end there. The food that comes from fast food isn’t cleaned well at the slaughterhouses and has led to recalls from kids getting E.
