Lone Ranger And Tonto Fistfight In Heaven Analysis
Serious matters are usually addressed very seriously in many works of literature, but the times that they are not, authors use humor to reach their audience. Comedy is usually reserved for things that are funny yet Sherman Alexie successfully uses it in his day-to-day writing and has become an influential writer. In “Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven”, Alexie focuses on very serious themes, such as racism and domestic violence, and he is able to explore these themes by using humor. Alexie believes that he can speak to any audience of any political or religious influence because he has the ability to make people laugh. Sherman Alexie’s literature is always based on the Native American people and its culture, more specifically the Spokane tribe. Being a Native American, from the Spokane Indian Tribe, Alexie has experienced many of the challenges faced by the Native American people. The characters in Alexie’s poems/stories/films are complex, always dealing with a range of problems, problems that are difficult. His major themes in his stories are big and tough to talk about but he uses wit to speak to all people. The problems that Alexie talks about can span from racial inequality to lack of options and opportunities in the Native American community. One major …show more content…

It is writing about alcohol that helps me stay sober and I think reading about alcoholism helps other people stay sober,” (Big Think). Alexie talks about very serious issues during all of his writing, alcoholism being one. The character from “The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven” suffered from alcoholism that was brought on by the problem he has faced as a Native American. Alexie did not use his comedic strategies when allowing his characters to speak about the alcoholism situation, the comedic strategies were used in the beginning and that was enough to make a reader feel comfortable reading the story. It was almost a way of trapping the reading to continue

    In Sherman Alexie’s short story, “What You Pawn I Redeem,” Jackson, the protagonist, must figure out how he can merge his Native American culture into modern day Seattle. The characters in this story have similar characteristics of real life Native Americans. According to The main character, Jackson Jackson, is part of the Spokane Indian Tribe but he has moved to a larger metropolitan area in Seattle, which is much different from the cultured-based Spokane Reservation.     The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven written by Sherman Alexie and A&P written by John Updike are stories that represent the social constraint’s felt by each of the protagonists. Alexie’s story and Updike’s story complement each other in their context and have a very similar theme. Alexie’s story is about a young man who is held down by the racial indifferences he has encountered throughout his life. In turn, these indifferences have caused distrust and a subtle hatred towards whites and authority figures. Victor, the protagonist of the story, makes references to the indifferences felt through the allusion and symbolism in the story. The representation of the symbolism and the interpretation used shows that Sherman himself is using his writing as a means to come to terms with these deep-rooted feelings. In Updike’s story, the tone is not as dark and dismal as Alexie’s, though there is a similarity in the context. A&P represents a young man who is tired of being oppressed by the mundane routines of life. The protagonist in this story sees his life passing him by as he works at a grocery market. The epiphany is realized and comes to light when three young women come into the store wearing nothing but bathing suits. The symbolism and allusion the writer uses in this story also signifies the repressed emotions of feeling trapped by the pressures that society has placed on him. Both stories connect on a thematic level which is the feeling of being held back by social constraints. However, these stories side by side each delivers different messages to the reader, and the allegory message of each story differs.…

    An example when Alexie’s character, Jackson Jackson used humor in this story was when he was awoken from a drunken comma on the railroad tracks by a police officer. As Jackson wakes up he recognizes Officer Williams, a good white cop with a sweet tooth. “I am taking you over to detox,” Officer Williams said. “No man, that place is awful.
