Summary of Key Points:
Our overall health can be affected if we go too long without social connections, because humans are made to have social contact. Everyone will get lonely from time to time and that's normal, but if you find you are lonely the majority of the time you will need to create social connections as to avoid negative health impacts. Feeling lonely can lead to feeling sad, destressed, and isolated from others. These “tag-along” feelings can lead to depression and alcoholism in adults and delinquency in children. Some of the non-mental health negatives that can occur due to chronic loneliness are poor nutrition, irregular sleeping patterns, eradication
of arteries, and high blood pressure. According to a study conducted by the AARP, feeling lonely is particularly high for adults as they get progressively older so they need to find ways to prevent this feeling.
To prevent being lonely take the time to put yourself out there with family and friends. Find a hobby that you enjoy and see if there is an organization that goes along with it. Clubs are great ways to meet new people who have things in common with you. You can even look for social connections with people you already know, like your family. Take time to attend relatives’ extracurricular activities such as a sports game or a concert. Try and make it to all family social events like reunions and invite them to do daily outings with you.
