Sometimes when peoples identities are hidden, they choose to cross over to the evil side of humanity. in the novel Lord of the Files, this group of boys get stranded on a deserted island and have to fend for themselves. They first decide to have a leader, roles and jobs to have a calm function society throughout the island. Although a bit after, the boys go crazy; instead of having roles and leadership, the boys turn into savagery and “every man for himself”. Anonymity plays a role in this chapter as in the Lord of the Flies, anonymity was used in a bad way by Jack because it made him a fiercer hunter then before. More over Anonymity is a very negative thing to use, because it can lead to violence and chaos. In Lord of the Flies Jack uses anonymity to disguise his identity and put him into the position of a hunter. “The mask was a thing on its own, behind which Jack hid, liberated from shame and self-consciousness."This quote is from chapter 4 describing Jack the first time he paints his face. When we wear a mask, we are usually trying to be someone or something we are not such as when we dress up in costume for Halloween. Jack's face painting, which is his mask, allows him to become what he really is - a savage. All people were savage inside and that society's rules kept us civil. The story shows what happens to a group of boys when they no longer have rules. Jack becomes the leader of these boys because he is the first to show his savage nature in such an obvious way.
