having him paint on a mask symbolizing how much the boys have lost their identities. The author also showed the reader his transformation by writing " Ralph was fighting to get near, to get a hand full of that brown vulnerable flesh. The desire to squeeze and hurt was over mastering" (115). Ralph is into hunting now and really is craving meat. At the beginning of the novel, Ralph wouldn’t have even thought about killing a living thing. In this chapter, Ralph has become more aggressive and vicious.
Jack is another main character who proved change wasn’t always a healthy thing.
Jack's ideas are that things ought to be civil and in order. In the novel, there is a point where Jack wants to set rules and wants to get things done. "We've got to have rules and obey them. After all, we're not savages" (122). He is resembling good vs. evil. As the story progresses, Jack paints a mask on his face, he's ready to hunt. "Jack planned his new face" (31). The paint allows the boys to free themselves from their identity and their old life. This is the escape Jack's been looking for, a way to forget his past. The mask was something where Jack could hide. "Jack began to dance and his laughter became a bloody thirsty snarling" (33). Jack rejoices in the kill and is unable to think about anything else. The littluns are scared of the things they see at night. They give their fear a name and a picture in their imagination and since you can't fight something that’s not really there they create an imaginary thing to be afraid of. As Jack chants with the other boys "Kill the beat, cut her throat, spill her blood" (69), the author is trying to make the reader angry and filled with disgust, the words used "Cut her throat" and Spill her blood" are very unpleasant and cruel and savage things to
do.
