The something isn't hunger, but instead it’s the fact his ego was hurt when he didn’t kill one yet. Ego is also one of the internal tendencies in Freud's division of the mind and one of the things Frued mentions about ego is that it uses defense mechanisms to achieve what they want and what they want to say.
