Summary
In chapter 9 Simon awakens and once he’s on his feet he notices the lord of the flies. He then begins to shout into the clearing asking “what else is there to do”(145). After receiving no reply he begins to stagger his way up the mountain. When he reaches the top he notices the body of the parachutist and realizes that the boys have mistaken the beastie for the parachutist. Simon then untangles the lines from the rock and sets the parachute free. Simon turns toward the beaches and notices that the boys have shifted their location on the island. Simon assumes that the boys have changed locations so they can be further away from the beast and he begins to stagger his way back down the mountain towards the boys to tell them about his his discovery. Meanwhile,
Piggy suggests that himself and Ralph should go to Jacks party to make sure nothing goes wrong. When they arrived at the party Jack offers them some food. Afterwards Jack asked if anybody else wanted to join his tribe.
Ralph points out that he is still chief but Ralph ignores his point and rambles on. Ralph mentions that he has the conch but Jack is quick to point out that he doesn't actually have the conch and the conch rule doesn't apply at that end of that island. Rain clouds begin to form and lightning begins to flash. Ralph questions Jack on the shelters. In response jack commands the boys to do their dance. Jack stumbled his way into the open space and the boys followed. Roger begins to act like a pig and the boys grab on to their weapons. They begin to move in a circle and they start chanting words. The littluns moved outside the circle. Ralph and Piggy join in on the dancing and chanting. Soon after Roger retires from being a pig and becomes a hunter like the other boys leaving the ring empty. Soon a figure begins to emerge from the the forest and

Suddenly, Ralph looks up to see a naval officer standing over him. The officer tells the boy that his ship has come to the island after seeing the blazing fire in the jungle. Jack’s hunters reach the beach and stop in their tracks upon seeing the officer. The officer matter-of-factly assumes the boys are up to, as he puts it, “fun and games.” When he learns what has happened on the island, the officer is disappointed, how could this group of boys, he asks—and English boys at that—have lost all reverence for the rules of civilization in so short a time? For his part, Ralph is…

Of all the boys, only the mystic Simon has the courage to discover the true identity of the beast sighted on the mountain. After witnessing the death of the sow and the gift made of her head to the beast, Simon begins to hallucinate, and the staked sow's head becomes the Lord of the Flies, imparting to Simon what he has already suspected: The beast is not an animal on the loose but is hidden in each boy's psyche. After a while on the island under Ralph’s rule, the boys get tired of working all day long and decide to join Jack’s tribe. Jack has a contrasting view of life on the island and his tribe just hunts and feasts. They do not even have shelters. Ralph and Piggy are the last to switch over to Jack’s tribe and when they do, all of the boys start chanting the hunting song they made up. “The beast struggled forward, broke the ring and fell over the steep edge of the rock to the sand by the water. At once the crowd surged after it, poured down the rock, leapt on to the beast, screamed, struck, bit, tore” (Goulding 213). After the boys killed Simon, Ralph realized what he did was wrong and he left Jack’s tribe. This shows that bad people can get good people to do evil things, but the person will always be good at heart.…

Civilization still has a little bit of control over Roger's mind and sanity. He seems to feel as if he is still surrounded by rules, laws, consequences and adults. Adults are the ones that make the rules and ensure they are enforced. In chapter four "Roger grabbed a handful of stones and began to throw them. Yet there was a space around Henry, perhaps six yards in diameter, into which he dare not throw. Here, invisible yet strong, was the taboo of the old life. Round the squatting child was the protection of parents and school and policemen and the law. Roger's arm was conditioned by a civilization that knew nothing of him and was in ruins." This symbolizes civilization…

All the boys deserted Ralph, Piggy, and Simon and chose Jack’s tribe. While the two tribes are separated at the opposite sides of the island they still run into each other with conflicts in hand. Jack’s tribe did not have fire so they snuck up on Ralph's tribe and attacked them while sleeping. They stole Piggy’s glasses and left them with nothing against the spine-chilling night, “We’ve had a fight with the others” (167). Another issue was with the group of hunters that made their first kill when hunting while in charge of keeping the fire going. All the hunters that stayed back decided to leave the fire and to go kill the pig. With no one there to keep the fire going, it extinguished. Meanwhile, on the beach Ralph is looking out to sea and spies a thin line of smoke move across the sea, everyone jumped for joy, but then realized there was no smoke signal to catch the ship's attention. Returning from the forest, the hunters yelling out excitedly, “Kill the pig. Cut her throat. Spill her blood” (69). Ralph realizes that he can not do everything and feels the heat of being…

Ralph says in the beginning of the story after the boys voted, “‘Who wants me?’ Every hand outside the choir except Piggy’s hand was raised immediately. Then Piggy, too, raised his hand grudgingly into the air. Ralph counted. ‘I’m chief then’” (Golding 23). Ralph is committed to being chief and stays that way. There are some situations that happen that make him think of resigning but he never does because he believes he is the best leader for the other boys. Ralph yelling at Jack after forgetting about the fire, “‘There was a ship. Out there. You said you’d keep the fire going and you let it out!’ He took a step toward Jack, who turned and faced him. ‘They might have seen us. We might have gone home---’” (Golding 70). Ralph is very committed to getting rescued and won’t care about any worthless activities Jack does on the island. He is also really committed to the being friends with Piggy and Simon and the littluns so he does not switch sides with Jack. Piggy says to Ralph later in the story, “‘I expect they’ve gone. I expect they won’t play either… They always been making trouble, haven’t they?… We can do without ’em. We’ll be happier now, won’t we?’” (Golding 131). Piggy tells Ralph that they don’t need Jack and his tribe; Ralph sticks with Piggy because he believes that is the right thing to do. He is loyal friend to Piggy since he is always getting…
