Summary

Ralph declares a meeting proclaiming that they haven’t been building shelters, collecting water in coconut shells, defecating in the proper areas, and maintaining a signal fire. He focuses on how important the signal fire is because it can help them get rescued. The littluns are frightened of their visions of the beast and insists that they have seen it. Ralph states that there is no beast and Jack agrees, but suggests he and his hunters will find and hunt down the beast if there is such a thing. After the assembly, they

All these themes are present but in chapters 8 through 12, the highlight theme I recognized was fear. In the first four chapters, although they were scared, there were less conflicts and more freedom to have fun and live free. Now, the beast is more present and is the main conflict they are dealing with other than the constant rival for chief between Ralph and Jack. The main scenes were their exploration for the beast and other monsters which was triggered from the discovery of the beast the twins found on the mountain. The more they are holding on to their fear of the beast, the less work they achieve. Simon’s fear was part of the reason why he had illusions and thought that the pig head he encountered started talking to him. Both the littluns and biguns are afraid of the beast but the biguns conceal their fear more because of the responsibilities and tasks they have to …show more content…
This is a description of the pig head on the stick also known as the Lord of the Flies. This would be a similie because it is comparing the noise the flies made with the noise a saw makes.

6. During their search for the beast, there were moments of affability between Ralph and Jack when Ralph let Jack lead the search instead of him. Also when Ralph volunteered to look at the caves, Jack joined him. “A sound behind him made him turn. Jack was edging along the ledge. “Couldn’t let you do it on your own” (Golding 106). This shows that although there is conflict between both of them, they know how to come together and reason. Their fear of the beast allowed them to work together. Although Jack and Ralph have negative feelings toward each other, they wouldn’t allow each other to get killed by the thing they fear the most.

7. Critical Questions
Why do you think Simon was having those illusions about the pig head or Lord of the Flies?
What do you think will happen to the separate groups? Will one group survive or will Jack or Ralph become isolated?

8. Vocabulary tempestuously: characterized by strong and conflicting

As the tension between Ralph and Jack increases, we see more obvious signs of a potential struggle for power. Although Jack has been deeply envious of Ralph’s power from the moment Ralph was elected, the two do not come into open conflict until this chapter, when Jack’s irresponsibility leads to the failure of the signal fire. When the fire—a symbol of the boys’ connection to civilization—goes out, the boys’ first chance of being rescued is thwarted. Ralph flies into a rage, indicating that he is still governed by desire to achieve the good of the whole group. But Jack, having just killed a pig, is too excited by his success to care very much about the missed…

Symbols are made to show a profound meaning of something to the world, whether it is a positive symbol or a diabolical symbol. The protagonist, Ralph, and another boy known as Piggy are stranded on a deserted island after surviving a plane crash. Ralph uses a conch shell to alert the other boys of where he is, and once gathered they decide to designate a leader. The second task Ralph declares, is the first time we see the fire, that they light a signal fire on the mountain. The boys without any other thought go to light the fire. Throughout, the rest of the novel the importance of the fire becomes more and more influential. The fire in Lord of the Flies by William Golding represents hope, destruction, and savagery found in society.…

Jack, Ralph, and Piggy acted like wild animals when they were violently murdering Simon as though he was the best they thought. Their behaviour could have been the beast inside them all along, but they may have not realized it. Just like their behaviour towards Simon, the beast is also presumed to be a wild and violent creature, who will show no mercy to its prey, just as Jack,Ralph, and Piggy showed not even the slightest mercy proven by this ‘Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!'"(Chapter 9). To Simon when they pushed him off the cliff and killed him. Every bit of their anger and depression has demonstrated their ability to act like the beat within themselves, and maybe that is why they killed Simon without any…

In the midst of danger, one will make irrational decisions. On the island, the boys are faced with many types of fears. Once the boys hear that there is a “beastie” on the island, one of Jack’s first ideas is to hunt it down. When Ralph doesn’t agree that they should be out searching for the beast, conflicts arise among Jack and Ralph which result in the separation of group. Without Ralph and Piggy, Jack’s group eventually turn to savages and do as they please, not feeling guilty or caring for a thing that happens. The boys recite an incantation right before Simon stumbles upon the camp and is brutally murdered by the boys, thinking that Simon is the beast. “Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!” (Golding 152). The death of Simon is a major turning point in the story because it signifies the boys’ major deterioration in morality and how less and less careless they’ve gotten since the crash. Another type of fear the boys are faced with is the fear of Jack. As the novel advances, Jack becomes more and more of a ruthless tyrant. He uses Roger to torture Samneric and by that action, he shows that he is powerful and whoever doesn’t listen to Jack will be punished…

First off, when one is fearful, their mind can become focused on what their immediate emotions are telling themselves to think because it is unknown to them. Jack’s views of the ‘beast’ depend on how his feelings are at any given time. That aside, Jack ultimately fears the beast even though he pretends to cover it up. When Jack leads Ralph and the boys to find the beast, “Ralph let Jack lead the way; Jack trod with theatrical caution” (Golding 101). Jack’s gesture of caution signifies his fearfulness as the boys go out to explore the possibility of a beast. Although Jack tries to hide it from the group as he leads the way. Jack also talks about the beast, Jack shouts back at Ralph as he disagrees with him regarding the rules and talk of the beast, “Bollocks to the rules! We’re strong—we hunt! If there is a beast we’ll hunt it down! We’ll close in and beat and beat and beat--!”(84) Jack’s objective is to disregard Ralph whenever possible. Jack clearly shows his fear of the beast in the first quote. Now, this proves that Jack is unsure and shows his way of coping with his fear of the unknown. Jack will never admit to thinking the beast is real, and will certainly not admit his fear. Although, Jack is not the only one…

" The mentality of the beast along with the fear and evil that goes along with it, is all in their heads because the beast is morally apart of them. He now see's that evil lies within every human's blood and establishes that the savage within, drives ambitious among the boys to further excel the inner Satan figure all humans possess. Simon always felt the instinct that the boys are the beasts on the island but did not want to bring himself to believe that they came to the conclusion of corruption. All vestiges of civilization and innocence is on a very fine line because majority of the boys are drawn into temptation to become something inhuman because it is innate to…
