Lord Of The Flies
1. Ralph is elected chief because he wins the vote. Ralph wins the vote because of the power he possesses, the size of him, his attractive appearance and the fact that he has the conch. The election symbolizes the small community that is forming “Lets have a vote.” Page 30, Chapter 1
2. Golding introduces the choir in the first chapter; he does this by having Ralph blow on the conch so the boys in the choir come to look what it was. Golding first introduces the boys in a creative manner. He introduces them as a creature. “With the diamond haze of the beach, something dark was fumbling along.” Page 26, Chapter 1. This introduction as a dark creature foreshadows the darkness that the choir will boast further along in the story line. Golding then introduces them as a group, all wearing the same attire, all following the choir leader, Jack Merridew.
3. The setting in Golding’s novel is an island, which exhibits many features of a Paradise. “The shore was fledged with palm trees.” Page 14, Chapter 1. The island setting also has a dark side to it. The dark side has been burnt by the fire. The dark side is mainly forest. “Behind this was the darkness of the …show more content…
forest proper and the open space of the scar.” Page 14, Chapter 1.

Throughout the small government and community that is forming, there will be problems. Some of these problems include the age of the community, as they are at such a young age, they will not be able to make smart decisions together and they will always be fighting amongst each other. I also believe that there will be problems between Jack and Ralph. This is because they both want to be the leader of the community. “Jack’s in charge of the choir. They can be-what do you want them to be?” Page 31, Chapter 1. This quote shows how Jack is in charge of the choir. With Jack, the head of the choir, he will have the power of all these boys and they will do what Jack
wants.
5. Piggy says that they are acting like a crowd of kids because they all go off to make a fire without any consideration and without listening to what Ralph has to say. Golding has piggy stand out from the rest of the group physically and mentally. Physically, his body figure and body type. The boys are all fit and energetic, where Piggy is obese, not very fit at all and he is an asthmatic. Mentally, Piggy stands out because he is smart, unlike the rest of the boys (excluding Ralph). Piggy is portrayed as the classic “nerd”.
6. The longer that Jack’s choir and group stay on the island, the more savage-like they become. The killing of the pigs is one act, which the boys do which makes them behave savage-like. The boys do this act because they want to seem like hunters, they want to kill and they are also doing it to get meat to eat. “But we want meat!” Page 68, Chapter 3. Another savage-like act that the choir accomplishes is not washing. The choir does this to seem tough; to make themselves seem more savage-like so they are not scared of whatever else is out on the island. The choir uses face paint also. The face paint consists of Pigs blood and black charcoal. The boys painted this on their faces to hide from their real feelings at the time. The choir did this because Jack wanted them too and also because they wanted to seem tough also. The masks hid their true identity and made them into something much worse, something much more evil. “He looked in astonishment, no longer at himself but at an awesome stranger.” Page 80, Chapter 4
7. Golding has used the Beastie/Snake-thing to represent evil and fear. Early on in the novel, he uses the beastie to show evil on the island but also to show fear. Initially, the fear is a fear that there is an evil monster on the island, then later on in the novel, the boys come to the conclusion that it is there minds playing tricks and that themselves and their fear is the beastie. The beastie represents evil, as the boys realize that the beastie is themselves, we as readers come to think that their minds are evil also.
8. The conflict and problem between Jack and Ralph is that they both want to lead the group. However, the problem inside that problem is that they both want to lead it different ways. In the chapter title ‘painted faces and long hair’, this conflict becomes more obvious because Jack wants to go off and kill pigs and hunt “The rest are making a line. Come on!” Page 80, Chapter 4, where Ralph thinks that is a stupid thing to be doing. Jack starts to become more savage-like along with the choir.
9. The fire in the novel symbolizes evil on the unfriendly side, and it also symbolizes the violence that the unfriendly side demonstrates. The fire symbolizes the violence that is has because of the death it has caused to one of the boys on the island.
