Simon in this story is the silent leader, he is always watching over the little children to make sure they are safe. One day Simon slips away into the wasteland to admire the tranquility. He stumbles across a dead pig’s head propped up on a stick, waste of the hunters kill. He becomes hypnotized almost with interest in the pig’s head. The dead pig’s head talks to Simon, telling him that he will never escape what haunts him. He claims the evil will always be inside him and the tribe of boys, that they are the dreaded beast they have been afraid of for so long. For example, on page 143, Golding composed a conversation between the two, “‘Fancy thinking the Beast was something you could hunt and kill!’ said the head”.
