Studying ALD

Dear Doctors,
Our son Lorenzo has a degenerative genetic disease called Adrenoleukodystrophy. This heartless disease is result of having a female parent that is a carrier. The symptoms go from tantrum fits, to losing physical and cognitive abilities to, eventually death. This is all due to the build up of long chained fatty acids building up on the myelin in the brain caused by the disease.
Our son has been on a trans fat free diet for six months now. Not only have we not seen an improvement in his levels of long chain fatty acids, we have seen an increase of them. All of our doctors will not act on this issue. His condition is not improving.
We decided to take matters into our own hands and researched everything from the disease itself, to the basis of how fatty acids are broken down in the body. We found that the reason that the diet is not working is because the absence of all saturated fats provokes the body to make even more of the long chain fatty acids.
We have came up with a formula of simple, edible oils that have effectively made the levels of very long chain fatty acids (VLCFAs) decrease greatly, and over time the levels dropped down to normal. The oils are derived from olive oil and rapeseed oil. The reason it is successful, is because of the oleic acid and erucic acid in the oils. These oils completely stop the enzyme that makes VLCFAs.
We have much hope in this oil, in which we have called Lorenzo's oil. Lorenzo has been on this treatment and it has worked. We have hope that you will review this information and start a trial on Lorenzo's oil immediately. This could be the lifesaving liquid for boys suffering with ALD. We need to get this out to the doctors and parents alike. Thank you.

Sincerely yours,

Augusto & Michaela

According to “Face the Fats” (2013), the unhealthy fats are, saturated and trans fats, tend to be more solid at room temperature (like a stick of butter). The healthy fats are monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats and they tend to be more liquid (like liquid vegetable oil). Saturated fat is found mostly in foods from animals and some plants. Polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats are found mainly in many fish, nuts, seeds and oils from plants. Some examples of foods that contain these fats include salmon, trout, herring, avocados, olives, walnuts and liquid vegetable oils such as soybean, corn, safflower, canola, olive and sunflower. Both polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats may help lower your blood cholesterol level when you use them in place of saturated and trans fats, Face the Fats (2013).…

Adrenoleukodystrophy also known as ALD is a deadly disease that can affect 1 in 18,000 people. ALD is an X linked chromosome that is genetically inherited from the mom passed down into her unborn son. Women carry X chromosomes and men carry the X and Y chromosomes, however if a man inherits two X chromosomes from the mom instead of just one then he will have Adrenoleukodystrophy. This disease most commonly affects boys and men. Adrenoleukodystrophy is a brain disorder that destroys the myelin, the protective sheath that surrounds the brain’s neurons, the nerve cells that allow us to think and to control our muscles. ALD does not discriminate in one’s race, ethnic, or geographic barriers. ALD is most devastating in early childhood years ranging…

    Lorenzo's Oil Essay

The movie, "Lorenzo's Oil", was about a family that found out that their son had been diagnosed with a rare, genetic disorder of which was considered incurable. The sex-linked disorder ALD, passed on by the x-chromosome, of which is usually accompanied by the unfortunate fate of death, has also been known to bring forth muteness, blindness, comas, seizures, and deafness. With no known cure for ALD, or any possible way of escaping its final result (death), doctors would use a special treatment to prevent any further deterioration of the brain, depending of course on the severity of the damage done prior to treatment. In Lorenzo's case, the disorder had already corrupted too large of an area of his brain so the treatment given by the doctors would have been of little help to him. In most cases, death occurs nine months after diagnosis, however, Lorenzo's parents refused to let death be his only option and they did their best to find another treatment to help their boy.…
