This paper is supported by an interview to Lorna Fermin, Case manager, South end Community Health Center, 1601 Washington Street Boston MA 02141. This is an assignment for Case Management in Human Services Class for Professor Frank Militello. Title of Paper
Research among mental health care professionals, indicate that “ in a variety of roles such as nursing, social work, psychology, psychiatry, case managers and mental health workers are often required to provide a high degree of care to clients over time which can result in physical and psychological complaints often referred to as compassion fatigue”(2013). It is argued that “being affected with a stress-related condition, such as compassion fatigue or burnout, does not only affect the health care workers themselves but also anyone around them including patients who report lower satisfaction with services” (2013). In human service, agencies focus in fulfilling the client’s necessities. Depending on the type of organization, this will also invest in supporting workers to ensure their emotional health. It is important for Human service providers to be both physically and emotionally healthy, since one cannot promote health while remaining unhealthy. The quality of the work environment is one of the most important factors in the workplace. One can get a lot done in a day and think that is successfully meeting the client’s needs, however, with no emotional support one can get emotionally fatigued. For this reason, support, supervision and training are essentials in order to provide the best services for both the client’s and the worker’s emotional health.     Case managers are responsible for many aspects of a consumer’s case (primary management of case – which may include service acquisition, housing, benefit utilization, etc). Case managers tend to be the go to person when something happens (positive or negative) and are expected to provide immediate support and help the consumer resolve and deal the situation.     Compassion is defined as a sympathetic consciousness of others distress together with a desire to alleviate it (Merriam. Webster.com). It has a fundamental role among the healthcare workers. Especially among nurses, when they are indulging in bedside care for their patients. It helps the patients to relieve their stress and tension. Originally it was identified in social workers, as they see sad, sometimes devastating situations that they must deal with on a daily basis.
