Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It
How does one’s personal heritage affect one’s duties to our nation?

A person’s personal heritage can greatly affect their duties to our nation. An individual’s heritage is their personal customs and traditions. From the time one is born their family has taught them customs and traditions; the individual will then learn those customs and traditions; as time goes on that individual will chose to keep those traditions or they adapted to new traditions.
One may ask, how can an individual’s heritage affect one’s duties to our nation? In many families no one in the family votes in elections. If one is taught from a young age not to vote or they don’t hear about people around them voting, then chances are they will not vote when they are of age to do so. As a citizen it is your duty to vote in elections. Without voting one has no say so in who is put in charge of our nation, thus that individual has no say in the upbringing of our nation.
Also, our military plays a major role in our nation. Without a military our nation would not be what it is today. Some families are military families and raise their children with the intentions or hopes of them going into the military. Whereas some families raise their children to be afraid of the military and teach them that war is a very bad thing. Other families let their children chose the military life but are behind them all the way. It used to be that women were not allowed to be a part of the military and today in some families still frown upon. Without the families that teach their children to take on the great responsibility of serving in the military our nation would cease to exist. Serving in our nation’s military is the ultimate duty.
To recapitulate, there are many ways in which an individual’s heritage can affect their duties to our nation. Whether it is something small or something large it can still affect our nation with great impact. Keeping

In Barbara Ehrenreich’s Cultural baggage, the topic of ethnic heritage is discussed as the author is responding to an acquaintance asking her what her ethnic background is. Ehrenreich finds her purpose for writing her essay in making readers aware that no ethnic background is in fact a background. She takes on a not so common viewpoint of herself as most people pride themselves in where they came from and the traditions of their culture, rather than feeling almost embarrassed to claim their background.…

Spector (2000) designed a Heritage Assessment Tool which helps health care providers determine how a person adheres to his or her tradition. I was born and raised in China. When I immigrated to America, I was in my middle age. Therefore, I believed that I’ve instinctively absorbed a great deal of Chinese culture. The Heritage Assessment Tool helped me to understand that the place where people were born and raised is just one of the many factors that influence a people’s cultural formation. Many other factors, such as where your parents were born and raised, your religious preference, your friends, etc. affected people’s cultural heritage also. All my parents and grandparents were born and raised in other countries besides China although all of them were Chinese descendants. They had different cultural backgrounds and didn’t strictly observe Chinese tradition when they were living in China and raising me. They didn’t really know how to cook Chinese foods and how to celebrate Chinese traditional holidays. When my classmates visited my house, they were surprised that we didn’t have bowls and chopsticks, classic Chinese eating utensils, because we used plates and forks. The lack of religious preference was another important factor that leaded us to have fewer cultural heritages. The Heritage Assessment Tool makes me realize that we can’t simply judge a person’s cultural background according to their country of birth and ethnicity. This assessment just assists…

    Family Heritage

Interestingly, there is NO exact definition for family heritage. I think it is one’s identity according to their family tree. A family tree is a chart that traces the ancestors and descendants of a family throughout history and identifies the relationship of one family member to another. Family heritage differs from culture to culture, and country to country. In Africa, for example, symbolic gestures, masks, costumes, and body paintings are used as a form of communication, while Asian cultures are foreign to that form of art.…
