During Winter, the prisoners felt true bitter cold. Because of the incredibly cool weather, Eliezer’s foot swelled. He consulted a fellow Jew, a doctor prior to imprisonment, and is told that he needs immediate operation to prevent amputation. In the hospital, Eliezer was fed properly and didn’t have to work. After he awakened from his operation, Eliezer was afraid to ask the doctor if his leg has been amputated, but the doctor assured him that “in two weeks you'll be fully recovered… able to walk like the others.” (page 80). Two days after his operation, Eliezer heard that the front was advancing to Buna, and that very day the camp was ordered to evacuate. Hospital occupants were not to be evacuated, however, and Eliezer worries that they…
The time period during World War II was very devastating. There were a countless amount of brutal deaths, with people even being burned alive. The setting of Night takes place in 1944, in a concentration camp called Buchenwald. It all starts out when the main character, Eliezer, has his Jewish hometown overrun by the Germans. Eliezer's hometown gets turned into a ghetto by the Germans, and they are forced to stay in the ghetto until the whole neighborhood is sent to the concentration camps. That is when Elie realized that not everything is good, and that there are bad things in the world. During this time Elie’s father cried- this was the first time Elie had ever seen his father cry. Elie’s father begins to soften and break under the pressures of camps. Elie and his father are forced to work and get little to eat, and grow weaker and weaker by the days, however they still keep going. I believe that Eliezer lost faith because he didn’t believe he had anyone to believe in. He believed that if his lord was there for him, he wouldn’t be in the position he is in at the time. He would not be fighting for his life in concentration camps where he was being tortured. Other people were relying on their faith because they strongly believed they would get out of it if they pray often. I’m sure that in the end, if his father had not died he would still rely strongly on his faith. After his father died, he wasn’t relying on anyone but himself. He didn’t have to fight for anyone but himself. I believe that is why he didn’t strongly rely on his faith, because he no longer had faith in anyone but himself.…

Nicholas Cage once said, "I like flawed characters because somewhere in them I see more of the truth." In other words, Cage believes that if a character 'pretends' to be perfect then you will not see who the person really is, and you cannot really relate and connect with that person on a deeper level. This statement is true because through being flawed characters show more of themselves, and become more realistic. Elie from Elie Wiesel's Night and Yunior from Junot Diaz's Drown are two characters who are flawed and show who they really are, and therefore as readers we can connect to them.…

In the novel Night by Elie Wiesel, faith is a topic and a theme. It is brought up constantly throughout the novel. Wiesel starts off dedicated to his faith, and then he loses it when his family was taken away. By the end he was broken and faithless. This proves that one can lose faith by watching inhumane things; things no one should ever live through.…
In his memoir, Night, Elie Wiesel showed that the Jewish people of Wiesel's hometown, Sighet, held on to illusions that gave them a false sense of hope and safety before their arrival at Birkenau. An example of this is when foreign Jews were expelled from Sighet crying, but the people of Sighet rumored that the deportees “were in Galicia, working” (6) and “were content with their fate” (6). When Moishe the Beadle, one of the deportees, managed to escape and come back he informed the people of the horrific fate the foreign Jews had endured under captivity of the Gestapo, German secret state police, who “shot [the] prisoners” (6), but people wrongfully concluded that “he had gone mad” (7). The Jews of Sighet also thought that “Hitler [would] not be…
After having witnessed the crimes that took place in Auschwitz, such as babies being thrown in the crematoria, Eliezer’s faith began to break, he seems to have lost all hope in god and life. “The Almighty, the eternal and terrible Master of the Universe, chose to be silent. What was there to thank him for?” Eliezer seems to have developed hate towards God, he seems confused and hurt by the fact that God allowed the ones who have worshiped him to be burned on his…
