Don B. Kates discusses “shall-issue” laws on concealed carry permits in the United States. In his article, he begins by evaluating a famous study done by John Lott. His study credits the ‘deterrent’ effect of states’ “shall-issue” laws which spread handgun licensing out to responsible citizens who abide by the law and have a very minimal criminal record. Lott’s study suggests that “there is a massive reduction in violent crime in the 1990’s because criminals believe that most citizens within these “shall-issue” states have concealed handguns, therefore, are less likely to attack”. After reviewing Lott’s study, Kates criticizes the concept of a “gun-free zone”. In short he says that when one…

China is, without a doubt, the fastest growing economy in the world today. Companies from around the world have wanted to tap into China's market to cash in on the tremendous success that it continues to experience. There had been many restrictions for foreign companies who tried to do business in China, limiting the number of foreign companies, and allowing only the big players to come into China. Even then, these big players from around the globe faced more restrictions and rules once they entered China. But things have changed since China joined the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2001; a new milestone for this country, as well as for other economies. Since then, restrictions for foreign investors and businesses to enter China's market had begun to ease up. By December 11th, 2004, China must remove remaining restrictions on the retail sector in order to comply with the WTO rules. This means it will be much easier for foreign retailers to enter the market, and for current foreign retailers in China to expand (1). Many retailers from all over the world will seize this golden opportunity, and Target should do so too.…

The case study is a perfect example of how failure to know and understand the market one is competing in can be disastrous, even for corporations as large and as experienced as Wal-Mart. Just because something has been successful in America it does not mean that the same business model can be duplicated in a different global market with the same results. Wal-Mart entered into a joint venture with Charoen Pokhand (CP) Group to facilitate their entry into the Chinese market. However, they failed to utilize one of CP’s greatest assets, their market knowledge, and this ultimately led to the demise of their Value Club stores. If Wal-Mart had properly used CP’s expertise to better understand the Chinese marketplace they would have devised an entry strategy that catered to the wants and needs of the local market and subsequently increased their chances of success.…

While the company’s success was largely attributed to Walmart’s ability to maintain low prices and provide exceptional customer service, they also depended on their revolutionary internal distribution process (Farhoomand, 2006). At the time of their opening in Shenzhen, the biggest challenge Walmart faces were the 700 chain store companies that were already operating in China. Until 2005 when China officially lifted distribution restrictions for foreign companies, Walmart had been forced to rely on Chinese suppliers to outfit their stores.…

Wal-Mart is the second largest company in the world. Its focus is on mass merchandising as opposed to specialty merchandising. The idea behind mass merchandising is to offer products and services in one convenient store to better manage a consumer’s time. Similar to a mall, Wal-Mart meets all of its customers’ needs in one location. This is a very valuable ability because it allows the customer to have more control over his or her time. Secondly, Walmart also realized economies of scale by selling bulks of commodities right off pallets, through its Sam’s Club under membership. Walmart also captured the benefits of arbitrage by constantly improving its logistics to lower the transportation costs and improve the efficiency.…
