A person's life was determined by their rank and status in their country. Those who were the loyalists of their rulers followers received a handful of kindness from that ruler, which lead to having a better life with a better rank. A lot of the rulers depended on the loyalty of their others and kings. Without that, it would fall from power. Beowulf worked mainly out of loyalty, he tried to be a servant to his king by making peaceful friendship between the Danes and Geats. He created that peaceful friendship by defeating Grendel and his mother. Because Beowulf wasn’t selfish and unloyal, it gave him a well known reputation and popularity with both the Geats and Danes and their kings. In Beowulf, there is a part that says, “Nor have I seen a mightier man-at-arms on this earth than the one standing here: unless I am mistaken, he is truly noble. There is no more hanger-on in a hero’s armour.” (244) Beowulf’s identity as a hero has become pretty obvious to the Danes just by looking at him. He’s actually the real deal and not someone he isn’t, he seems to have the “realness” exposed more.
