Lub Dub: A Short Story
Echoing in my ears, a peal indicates it is my turn to take on the ride of terror.

Lub dub. Pressurised blood being pushed out of my arteries sounds like a mechanic inflating a bicycle tire with a handpump. Lub dub. A tingling sensation, like an ant’s bite, rushes under my skin, trying to chase the blood dashing in my tiny veins. Suddenly, I find myself counting my heart beat. Then, everything turns absolutely silent. For a moment, my breathe blends into the silence around it.

Settling myself down onto the ride, I feel a little uncomfortable. Stepping onto the roller coaster, the metal seems like sinking beneath my feet. The unstable ground bounces up and down as “passengers” exiting and entering the ride. The black plastic seat has been bleached, giving the riders a sense of disgust and uneasy. Placing my arms on the armrest, the rough surface feels like hundreds of blunt pencils rubbing on my skin. Sitting down, my legs are cramped by the lack of space. Staring at the exit of the tunnel, the rusty rails shimmer in a ray of light. Turning to my right, I notice my neighbours’ faces getting paler and paler as we approach the start of the ride. Again, my body is thrown forward by the movement of the ride. For a short second, I see myself sitting on the highest peak in the theme park. Burning my skin, the merciless sun is floating directly above my head, in the middle of the deep turquoise sky. Reaching outward to look below, I can

Deep within the heart of New Jersey, the world-renowned Kingda Ka towers over the lofty peaks of Six Flags Great Adventure Amusement Park at a staggering height of 456 feet. The vehicle’s whimsical blue and green hues contradict its terrifying and thrilling nature. The incredible speeds of the roller coaster certainly provide enough of a thrill for the most daring adventure seekers. The winding path that the ride takes as the machine makes its way through the sky resembles the body of a snake as the animal slithers over the jungle floor. The turbulent trolley’s precipitous drop strikes fear into the hearts and minds of all riders that decide to meet the coaster’s challenge. Screams of terror and…

It was a very cool experience to find out the history of roller coasters. Going from a wooden sled or block of ice sliding down a hillside, to building them out of wood, and finally out of steel, was very similar to other creations. People realizing that there are better and more efficient ways to create roller coasters made them what they are today. The one principle that we talked about is centripetal force which occurs on the loops on a roller coaster, the inward forces applied on the rider during the loops. In the main part of this essay we learned the physics of roller coasters and how they are applied to the…

Once the attendant let us inside the Rugged Maniac, Olivia and I took off running toward the water slide. Climbing to the top of the slide, we slid into the tube and held on for a twisty ride. Next, we scaled the tree that led to the top of the zip line course. Strapping ourselves in, we flew through the treetops and felt as free as a bird. Then, we sprinted to the dock that kept the jet skis anchored to the lake’s shore. Starting one up, we hopped on and rode off toward the opposite side of the lake, while the wind whipped our hair into our faces. Finally, we made it to our last destination, the cliff dive. Nervously, we greeted the attendant at the ridge. Looking at each other, we knew there was no going back now. We clasped hands, counted to three, and carelessly jumped off the…

My heart began to pound with fear and excitement.…

As we embarked on the first ride, my brother and I begged our parents to join us and came the expected response of, “You guys go and enjoy, and we will watch you from the side.” We expected them to say that for they were exhausted after a long week of work. We passed the remark and handed the ride attendant our admission tickets for the ride. We took seats right by each other, not daring to think about another kid riding by us. The ride took off, and the screaming began, even if this had been the 15mph little caterpillar “roller coaster.”…
