Lub dub. Pressurised blood being pushed out of my arteries sounds like a mechanic inflating a bicycle tire with a handpump. Lub dub. A tingling sensation, like an ant’s bite, rushes under my skin, trying to chase the blood dashing in my tiny veins. Suddenly, I find myself counting my heart beat. Then, everything turns absolutely silent. For a moment, my breathe blends into the silence around it.
Settling myself down onto the ride, I feel a little uncomfortable. Stepping onto the roller coaster, the metal seems like sinking beneath my feet. The unstable ground bounces up and down as “passengers” exiting and entering the ride. The black plastic seat has been bleached, giving the riders a sense of disgust and uneasy. Placing my arms on the armrest, the rough surface feels like hundreds of blunt pencils rubbing on my skin. Sitting down, my legs are cramped by the lack of space. Staring at the exit of the tunnel, the rusty rails shimmer in a ray of light. Turning to my right, I notice my neighbours’ faces getting paler and paler as we approach the start of the ride. The roller coaster starts to climb hesitantly to the summit. Below, the theme park is filled with screaming and shouting. Creepy tunes playing in a haunted house start to repeat itself inside of my mind. Queues of people serpentine in front of every game seem like the park has been invaded with a bunch of snakes. Again, my body is thrown forward by the movement of the ride. For a short second, I see myself sitting on the highest peak in the theme park.
