Ludwig Van Beethoven Tragic Hero
A great example of a tragic hero is a man by the name of Ludwig van Beethoven. Beethoven was born into a dutch family of nobility in the field of music on December 17th 1770 in bonn. He was named after his grandfather, a bass singer. Beethoven's father, Johannes, was a court Tenor and pianist and was the first person to instruct young Ludwig in music. He taught him the piano, violin, and also possibly the viola. He went to elementary school in the Neugasse until his first public performance at the age of 7, where his father, seeing the latent talent that his son possessed, sought out for him other teachers, more suited for his talent.At this age, Ludwig Van Beethoven gave his first public performance, at Cologne. His father announced that
he was 6 years-old. Because of this Beethoven always thought that he was younger than he actually was. His family had a reputation throughout Holland in the musical world playing their music in palaces and theatres. The Beethoven family played in the palace of prince Elector. Ludwig's first teacher was his father, Johann Beethoven. It is said that Beethoven was seen weeping at the piano after being pushed so hard. However, his work payed off.Beethoven's music became known all throughout Europe. He displayed his talent to the public until one dreadful day where he was diagnosed with a severe form of tinnitus, a ringing in his years. The ringing progressively got worse over the years till the point where he could not hear his own music. Even though it is not documented, it is said that at the end of one of his performances of the ninth symphony, he had to be turned around to see the audience applauding his music. They had been applauding for almost two minutes before he noticed, he began to cry. Beethoven's last public concert was when he attempted to play his own piano concerto no. 5, but failed. This was a time of great despair for him. During this middle period of his life, he wrote symphonies 3-8,piano concertos 4 & 5, and his violin concerto, to name a few. But the years following 1816 are arguably his most productive, with his 9th symphony, and his final 7 piano sonatas, which were put more effort on unlike their predecessors. He was able to complete these masterful creations, including the extended finale in the 9th symphony, Ode to Joy, while being almost completely deaf.
