Topic 3: Sometimes lying is acceptable
Introduction: As a child, we were all told at least once that lying is something we should try to avoid. Of course lying is an act we try to avoid, but there are certain situations where telling a white lie would be acceptable. Specific situations where lying would be better than the truth would be for self-protection, the feelings of others, and urgent situations.
Topic 1: Self-Protection: In a scenario where you were about to be raped, hurt, or killed, one of the best ways to protect yourself is by telling a lie. In most cases, the human brain’s first instinct would be to say what you have to in order to keep yourself safe. For instance, if an unknown stranger comes up to you and asks for your address, you will never give in and tell him your address. This could lead to the robbing of your home, your entire family threatened and a general sense of insecurity. In this case, lying would be the right thing to do and the greater majority of people around would understand. Another example would be a homeless man with unusually nice clothing who asks you for change. In many cases, donating to the poor may be an act of love, but when it makes you feel uncomfortable, it is best to lie and tell the man you do not have change. In short, lying is the proper way to protect yourself when your safety is put at risk
Topic 2: The Feelings of Others: Another scenario in which lying is acceptable is when the feelings of others are at stake. It is alright to tell a lie if it could in turn help another person’s feelings. For example, if a girl was having a bad day and all she needed was a cheerful comment to enlighten her emotions, it is considered a good way to tell a lie. Just by saying “You look great today” could cheer her up even if that is not what you feel. Another situation could be if Christmas time comes and you forget to buy presents.
