Borreliosis, which is more commonly known as Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection caused by a bacterium called Borrelia, it is transmitted by the bite of infected sheep and deer ticks; the species which is more common to the UK. It can affect both animals and humans when bitten by an infected tick.
In both humans and dogs the first symptom is normally the distinguishable ‘bulls eye’ rash at the site of the bite, however, the rash can be missed on an animal due to their fur covering the area. Other symptoms include the dog appearing ‘under the weather’, lethargy, lameness, inflamed lymph nodes and fever.
