What does it take to be number one? As we know everyone loves a winner. Most people if they were asked who the fastest man in the world was? They would correctly answer with the name Usain Bolt. Nobody remembers number two right? However, let us imagine Mr. Bolt being told that he could compete in track and field but he could not officially win any medal because he was Jamaican. Sounds far-fetched today and against our values and everything we stand for in the 21st century? Well in the 1800s, things were very different especially for women and Mary Calkins was no exception. Mary Calkins not only made countless contributions to the field of psychology, her perseverance changed many perceptions resulting in…

Lynda Barry has an amazing and strong connection to her school. Throughout the story she is talking about how meaningful it is to her and how she thinks it's the only place where she actually gets noticed. In the illustration, Barry has a big smile on her face which means she's happy and it's showing that the school is Barry's safe-place and though it's not her home, church, or anything like that, it makes her happy and she feels like she can count on the people to look out for her. Along with the big smile on her face, she is also hugging the school. This shows her affection, love, and how much she adores it. In the image when she says "I'm home", it means that she has finally found a place where she feels comfortable enough to be herself…

I was in the sixth grade when I first met my best friend Jamilex. Jamilex and I were really close, we did everything together; our homework, went to the movies, hung out in the park, and often went her house where we had conversations about guys. We tried to spend time together as often as possible, because we didn't see each other during school hours since she attended a different junior High school. We saw each other every day after school to do homework together. I never thought I would finally meet a true friend but you know what they say, "Never say Never". I tried to do my best to keep her happy and be there for her when she needed a shoulder to cry on. Jamilex and I were so different but at the same time so alike. Her favorite color…

(He was different from everyone else, he had a birth-defect.) I said sure, why not, he seems to be nice. He only had one friend, and that one friend I wouldn't say was a good one. Later that week I was called into the disciplinarian's office, her name was Mrs. Landry. She was the seventh grade Social Studies teacher. So wanted me to tell her everything that happened, I didn't what to tell her,…
