Lyrics Of Katharine Lee Bates Song America, The Beautiful
America, The Beautiful
Katharine Lee Bates
1913
Lyrics of Song

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America! God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet,
Whose stern impassion’d stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America! God mend thine ev’ry flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!

O beautiful for heroes proved In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loved,
And mercy more than life!
America! America! May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness,
And ev’ry gain divine!

O Beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam,
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America! God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

The song writer did successfully communicate their message to their audience. The message is quite clear that the country is a gift from God that we should cherish.

3. The song does have a historical remodeling related to the war. The song mentions that the ones who fought for America are the real heroes. I feel that there is suppressed information here because it is not mentioned that the country once belonged to someone else before the war was fought. The songs leaves out many historical events that involved the war.

4. The song does hold a significance today. This song has a significance when it comes to freedom. America today is known as a country of freedom. However, the self control mentioned in the song is not what is portrayed today with people. It is hard to have self control when so many corrupt things are going on throughout the country. The military people are still seen today as heroes in our society just as they were seen as heroes back when the song was written

Toby Keith’s “American Soldier” demonstrates examples of pathos, ethos, and logos. The song explains a soldier’s feelings and responsibilities at hand. The emotions shown through the song are thankfulness, intenseness, and courageousness. The sound of the song is very soft in the beginning and picks up when he begins to talk about the duty he has. Ironically, the music change makes sense because he has to balance his time between work and family, and family is calming, while work on the other hand is intense. Toby Keith establishes credibility because he lives in America, knowing that freedom doesn’t come free, and the song is written in first person, describing when the songwriter went overseas. Toby Keith also establishes logos in his song…

America has always been regarded as the land of the free and the place where if you work hard, you will reach success. However, Langston Hughes disagrees with this idea in his passage, “Let America be America Again”. Hughes suggests that America was never “America” in the first place, and without unity, America will not be the place everyone has worked so hard to build to be what it is today. In “Let America be America Again”, Hughes develops a theme of commonality and unity being the factors that affects the objective of America being the land of the free.…

The speaker's use of a disappointed fed up tone and repetition in the beginning of the poem points out the false promise of freedom in everyday America. “O, let my land be a land where Liberty Is crowned with no false patriotic wreath”. America’s original dream of freedom isn't the dream anymore today, and the speaker insinuates that because of this inequality we have never experienced true freedom. He voices what maybe many people are thinking, there isn’t any freedom in the so-called “homeland of the…

After reading “Theme for English B,” “Let America be America,” and “I,Too.” I have concluded that all the poems are talking about how even though they might not all be the same color or have the same purpose in America, it is still everyone’s home. You learn from different people and they learn from you and what ,might be easy for you might not be easy for them because sometimes some people in this country are treated better than others. In the poem ‘Let America Be America” there is a line that says “O, let America be America again—The land that never has been yet—And yet must be—the land where every man is free” and I compare this line with a line from the poem “ Theme for English B” and it says “Well, I like to eat, sleep, drink, and be in love. I like to work, read, learn, and understand life.…

Since the creation of our beloved United States, America has been trademarked for its ideas of freedom and justice. Everyday millions of Americans pledge to these promises of their country. But, has it truly lived up to this idea of “justice for all”? Throughout history, America has acted as an older brother type to other countries, stepping in when they were in need, helping others, and working towards world freedom. But, within the country, its people still struggle to be heard.…

The American Voice is characterized by the theme of Bravery. This is demonstrated in the last paragraph when the Author states “ give me liberty or give me death”!. This means that he’d fight for his freedom or die trying. This idea is also found in “ I, Too, Sing America “, by Langston Hughes when he states “but I laugh, eat well, and grow strong”. This means that even though he is not treated right, he maintains to be strong. This supports the claim because it shows that Americans are not afraid, that they are brave.…

“To him, your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty, an unholy license; your national greatness, swelling vanity; your sounds of rejoicing are empty and heartless; your denunciation of tyrants, brass fronted impudence; your shouts of liberty and equality, hollow mockery; your prayers and hymns, your sermons and thanksgivings, with all your religious parade and solemnity, are, to Him, mere bombast, fraud, deception, impiety, and hypocrisy-a thin veil to cover up crimes which would disgrace a nation of savages”…

Americans believe they live in a beautiful country. There are many advantages to living in America, such as having a secure government, a controlled military, a judicial system that works, breathtaking landscapes, cleanliness, and the many freedoms that are granted to citizens in the U.S. Constitution. America became a rising power early in its life, allowing for these benefits. Although the United States of America is one of the great world powers, and perhaps the most supreme, its economic practices are driven toward the idea of spending and consumerism and the population’s values have become entirely reconstituted since its founding.…

People came to America, the “goldente medina” (91), or Golden Land, seeking religious freedom and natural resources not available in their home countries. People eagerly spoke of the new world and its promise of equal opportunity and wealth; what is now known as the American Dream. “What is the glory of Rome or Jerusalem where all nations and races come to worship and look back, compared with the glory of America, where all races and nations come to labor and look forward?” (34). America was, and still is, a land of promise for people of all races, religions, social standings.…

In America, every four years there is a presidential election that gives Americans the right to vote. The United States is a role model to other countries of the concept of giving all citizens equal share in the government and the way it is run. The Electoral College ruins the voting and creates an unfair system that is not equal. It destroys the fundamental part of democracy that gives everyone the right to vote. The Electoral College raises the question "Is the United States a republic?". With the Electoral College, it is a winner take all system which makes some votes practically useless. The founding fathers believed that most people were uneducated and would make uninformed decisions and the way news travel has changed. With this system,…
