Macbeth Compare And Contrast

Macbeth, let alone any shakespeare play, would be difficult to portray because so many people have different opinions about the the scene should be. Shakespeare's does not make this challenge any easier because he sets it up so the reader/viewer can make some interpretations his/herself. These two portrayals of Macbeth, the Kenneth Branagh and the Mel Gibson version, are extremely opposite to one another. Of course they still tell the story of Macbeth, but there is much controversy over who did it better. Personally, I think the Mel Gibson version was better for a few reasons. These include the scene's intensity, setting, and special effects. Both versions played highly to the intensity of the scene. Although the Branagh version was more intense, it seemed so over the top that the meaning of the scene was lost. The main way Mel Gibson brought intensity to the scene was through his inflection. It was very simple to tell when he was angry, sad, or scared because his tone reflected that. While looking down on Claudius and Gertrude, the viewer could tell very easily that he was upset and revengeful from his loud and speeding voice. This version decided to keep this scene inside the castle and take a more realistic approach to the ghost, unlike the Branagh version. In Branagh version, Macbeth is taken into the forest by the ghost. The scene become very unrealistic when the ground starts to crack open and bubble and explosion occur. The setting for this scene just seemed like it is out of of nowhere. It was very distracting to the purpose of the scene. Keeping this scene in the castle was just a smarter portrayal of the plot because the ghost was already spotted in the castle.
