Hallucinations
Bloody dagger, represents that he feels that this path murder was chosen for him and he couldn’t do anything about it. The vision is just a manifestation of his unease over killing Duncan
“Dagger of the mind, a false creation/ proceeding from the heat-oppressed brain.” ACT 2: Scene 1
Banquos ghost represents that he still has a conscience as he hears a man he hired had killed Banquos ghost who he just heard. This scene shows the difference in Macbeths character from the beginning of the play, until now. The vision represent the unfolding of Macbeth from a cold blooded and surefooted Macbeth to a paranoid, anxiety ridden, fearful Macbeth, letting his guilt get the best of him
Blood
Blood is a overarching theme throughout this play, symbolising the guilt which has permanently stained the conscience of both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. After Duncan’s murder, Macbeth cries out..
”Will all great Neptune’s ocean wash this blood / Clean from my hand?
This symbolises the guilt that he feels for killing the King. He questions weather he will ever be able to accept his actions. In response to this Lady Macbeth says“
(a) Little water clears us of this deed.” ACT 2: Scene 2 this is greatly ironic as in the later scene where she comes to share Macbeth’s horrific sense of being stained
“Out, damned spot; out, I say . . . who would have thought the old man to have had so much blood in him?
This shows her growing guilt from her naive
