Machiavelli Analysis

Machiavelli wanted leaders to be both fearful but at the same time, he wants them to be loving and caring. They should keep a balance between these two traits to be a successful leader. Machiavelli says,
“Here a question arises: whether it is better to be loved than feared, or the reverse. The answer is, of course, that it would be best to be both loved and feared. But since the two rarely come together, anyone compelled to choose will find greater security in being feared than in being loved. . .. Love endures by a bond which men, being scoundrels, may break whenever it serves their advantage to do so; but fear is supported by the dread of pain, which is ever present.”

This is a clear example what Donald Trump does, both when he was running for president, and after he became the president of the United States of America. Using this to please his people he also creates fear by showing the strength of the US to other nations in the world. Making sure they know that the only superpower country in the world is the United States of America. The other concept that Machiavelli’s talked about in his book was that a leader needs to “talk petty”, in which he must convince people that he as all different forms of characteristic traits, even though he may not have them, the leader must act in a way in which it as if he has them. In the case of Trump's voters/supporters, they are on his side no matter what he says or does. In the article, it says, “Trump voters regularly don’t believe him, but Trump voters remain Trump voters.” No matter what laws or regulations Trumps wants to pass, people still believe that he is still one of the best presidents the United States of America ever had. One of the reason is Trump always says “Make America Great Again” in which people want someone to do just that, and they believe that the best person for that job is Trump.
