(SIP-A) Due to the loss of Baba Jan, Najmah has trouble trusting others due to what she has seen and been through. (STEWE-1) When Najmah and Nusrat meet, Nusrat identifies Najmah as a girl. If Najmah was caught impersonating a boy she would be put in lots of trouble. And this would not allow her to find her father. “ Why is it not Shaheeda?, the child stands and looks quickly around the room as if searching for an escape route”(150). (STEWE-2) Najmah learns to trust Nusrat and allow her to help find Baba Jan by talking for the first time since the death of her mother. “How did you know?, says Najmah her voice a hoarse whisper”(194). This is a big change for Najmah, since the loss of her family has made it extremely hard for her to trust others. (SIP-B) Najmah now thinks of Nusrat as a trustworthy person which is very critical in her development. (STEWE-1) Nusrat tells Najmah that she is safe with her and that she will help her find her family. “And I will help you look for them if that's what you want”(199). This comforts Najmah in her relationship with Nusrat. She is now standing out as an even more helpful, caring person to Najmah. (STEWE-2) Najmah knows that if she goes back to the farm with her uncle he will marry her off and take their land. “ He will take me back and force me to marry someone. He will send me away and he will take my father's land” (216). When he arrives at Nusrat’s house looking for Najmah, Nusrat lies and tells him that she is not there, “Where is the boy I brought you yesterday, without missing a heartbeat, Nusrat smiles pleasantly. He found his family, Khuda ra Shakur, thank god” (214).
