PURPOSE OF THE PORTFOLIO A student enrolled in FS (Field Study) is required to make a portfolio. A portfolio is a personalized long-term documentation of student mastery of course material. In a portfolio it includes different kind’s evidences of reflections, journals, narrative reports, checklists on different field study like the learner’s development and environment, experiencing the teaching, technology in the learning environment, exploring the curriculum, learning assessment strategies and on becoming a teacher. My intention of making a portfolio is to complete the said requirements in my FS course. And also to learn and master about FS course a lot.

FIELD STUDY 1

Learners Development and Environment

DESCRIPTIVE PARAGRAPH
ILS is located at second street of MSU (main campus) looking at of ILS north you can see the Macarambon hall while at its east and south the residence area of barrio salam, and the college of CHARM hotel and restaurant management is located at the west of ILS. The school has different levels from kindergarten, elementary up to secondary level. In Elementary level they have five sections from section A to E while in secondary level they only have four sections from A to E. In ILS you can find the principal’s office for elementary and secondary, guidance counselor’s office, the CAT office, library, canteen, comfort room, laboratory, playground, park and the gymnasium.
ILS is a just a typical type of school if you are going to look or base it in its structure, its buildings and offices is as old as the school itself, the buildings were not renovated. They have a new gymnasium but it was not yet painted. The school campus is not that colorful. But what I love in this campus is that there are lots of trees. The offices of the school are as old as its buildings and classrooms. Nevertheless, the staffs and faculties of the school are performing their duty with utmost loyalty and efficiency. As you walk in the campus you will see the bulletin boards empty seldom there is information or announcements. But though, it has produced many brilliant persons and successful persons in every field o education or even in politics.

School environment Every person has its own idea of a good school environment. We all know that school is the place where we get knowledge about different fields. It is the place where we are being educated by the educators or the teachers. And it is the place where we meet different people that we socialize. A school should have good environment so that the learners can learn easily and teachers can have benefits also. When we say good school environment, in my own opinion it has something to do with the surrounding like the facilities and more, the curriculum being given to the students and also the teachers. My ideas for a good school environment are first, the school environment must have complete facilities and it should be organized. The school must have a complete and big library where students can research and study their lessons. The school must have laboratory room for their science subject. It should have computer rooms so that they are not limited when it comes to searching more information’s. And to be more exposed with science and technology.
Second one; it has something to do with the classrooms where it should have lockers so that students can leave some of their things that are heavy. It should have different rooms for different kinds of extra curriculums. Another thing is that each section or classroom must contain small number of students like 25 so that teachers can focus with each of the students.
Third one is that the location of the school must be near to nature where there are more trees, a wide playground and fields where the students can play and perform sports like soccer which is related to their subjects. The school must have pleasant surroundings.
And the last one is about the teachers. A good school environment must have good teachers because they are the one who teaches the students. They are also the one who teaches good values to the students. The teachers must be well trained and have the ability to teach. The teacher should also know how to motivate the students.

OBSERVATION REPORT On the 13th day of July 2012, we were deployed by our professor at MSU-ILS. The first thing we’ve done was we went to the principal’s office to introduce ourselves. She gave us a letter that would permit us to attend and observe a class. Then on July 23, 2012, I and my partner started our duty to observe a class. During my first observation I felt so excited because it was my first time to observe a class in MSU-ILS. I don’t feel nervous because we are only assigned to observe and even assist our critics and not to substitute our critics. It was a Ramadan day where everyone is hungry and felt sleepy. In section A, even if they are hungry they still shown to their teacher and to us that they still want to learn. While in other section in second year level like in section C and D, they were so noisy even if their teacher were in front of the class and discussing a new topic. After how many days, I observed that in other section especially in section D, some of them even the girls skip their class especially when it is Arabic class. And even those who are present didn’t cooperate in the classroom. The boys were misbehaving. The teachers need to motivate more their students so that they will get the attention of their students. Regarding the facilities that they have in MSU ILS, based on their classroom they don’t have enough instructional materials that their students can use. There was no classroom management when it comes to classroom arrangement and more. Their gymnasium also was not yet painted. They also have comfort rooms where the students can’t use it because of lack of water. Even their library is not complete with books or references. To sum it up, the students in MSU ILS needs more motivations, the teachers should apply more techniques in terms of their teaching so that students will learn more. A COMPARATIVE DESCRIPTION ON OBSERVED LEARNERS

LEARNER’S CHARACTERISTICS AND NEEDS

1. 1st learner (II-A)
One of the students that I observed in this section is belong to the girls. She is quite in the classroom. During our observation time in Arabic she always listens to the teacher. She is attentive that’s why every time they have a quiz she always got a higher scores.

2. 2nd learner (II-B)
One of the students of this section catches my attention where he is one of the intelligent in their room. The fact is that he always talks and sometimes it irritates the teacher. This student always asks to his or her teacher every time he was not able to understand some of their topic. And the result also is that he always got good grades.

3. 3rd learner (II-C)
During my observation in this section I observed that one of the students in section C doesn’t have interest in their subject Aralin Panlipunan. Sometimes or often he go outside the class for personal reason where the truth is he was just sitting in the tent near their classroom. He always missed to take their quiz because he always spent his time outside.

4. 4th learner (II-D)
At this section, a girl catches my attention. I observed that during their Arabic class, she doesn’t wear her vail where their teacher requires them to wear it always. She doesn’t listen to her instructor and that is why her grades are low. And her teachers were complaining on her behavior as if physically present but mentally absent. CLASSROOMS GYMNASIUM

Classroom Management and Learning

The effects of the classroom management to the learning are first, when there is a classroom management the student will learn a lot. They can be easily motivated by the teacher. When we say classroom management it focuses with the arrangement of the chairs, the teacher’s desk, the ventilation, the bulletin board and more. So if these are all being applied properly in a classroom learning will be effective.

Learners’ Characteristics and Learning Activities

There are different characteristics of the learners such as their confidence, their abilities, and their personality. Based on my observation, in Second year section A the students there have shown those characteristics that I have mention. Most of them have confidence in handling those activities that they met. They always participate in the classroom. Another one is that they have the ability to learn process and implement new skills easily because you can see to them that they are really interested to learn. And the last one is that most of them have a good personality where they show respect to one another especially to their teachers. Based on my observation, the activities that were given to them during their Arabic class are quizzes and oral recitations. The tests that were given to them are easy where before the test will start the teacher give them the chance to scan their note just like also when they have an oral recitation.

Perceived Roles of a Teacher
Teachers are the role model in a classroom. In my opinion, teachers must love their career in order for them to assists and to provide a warm environment to the students. In my opinion teachers are the second mothers for the students because we all know that students spend a lot of time with their teachers. I believe a real teacher becomes through many years of training and experiences in the field. We know that mothers look the best for their kids and one of their goals is to raise their kids so they can become a good person in the future.
There are all types of teachers some are better than others. Through my life I had met teachers who were well prepared and some who were not. I had some teachers who just came into the class and they just share stories to us and don’t give any lesson for the day. They also did not get involve with the students. I believe the way students act depends on the teacher’s attitude. That is why I strongly recommend all teachers to invite the student to participate in the class. It is very important that teachers encourage students because students will benefit from it.
A teacher carries a big responsibility in her classroom. One reason is that all students depend on her/him. Everything the teacher sys will have an impact on the students. The teacher must create a warm and protective environment but at the same time professional. If students feel secure in the classroom the result will be shown in the academic progress. A good star could be a mutual trust with each student.
I believe a teacher should also be someone who guides student rather than someone who is a totalitarian in the classroom. The teacher needs to show respect toward the students so the students also respect the teacher that an educator must be an open mind person that must respect the student’s diversity and give love and caring attitudes toward students. One of the roles that a teacher carries is to encourage students in the issues that bother them about school in their personal life. It could make a big difference in the student’s life if he/she is lift up to keep going and to not let anything put us down. Psychologically, students could be affected if they have problems with their teachers. One of the results could be that students will avoid going to school. As professional teachers, we do not want any conflict with the students.

Using different kinds of methods and strategies in teaching are very important to the learners because these are the way on how you get their attention. And these are the way on how can a teacher impart her lesson to his or her students. Instructional materials are important in teaching in such a way that the student will be able to know the lesson by using those materials. And through this the teacher can use some of it in demonstrating her lesson. The assessment tools also are important to the learners because these are the things they use when they have activities.

BULLETIN BOARD DISPLAYS
Evaluation report in viewed bulletin boards During my observation at MSU ILS, I have seen bulletin boards around the campus but the fact is that there are no information’s, arts or announcements being posted there. A bulletin board must contain different information for the benefits of everyone especially the students. The bulletin boards in the school campus are empty where the students can’t have any information’s about the latest about the school events and more.

Propose Bulletin Boards My proposal regarding the bulletin boards display, first there must be more than one bulletin board inside the campus. Each bulletin board must contain different features for example; there must be a bulletin board exclusive for the announcements coming from the head of the school. Another one is that a bulletin board for English department, math, science and more. They should have a bulletin board where they can post those exhibits, or those who win in an art contest, who passed in some scholarships and more. If those things will be implemented, the school will be more alive and they will be exited to do better in many fields so that they will be recognized by others through the bulletin boards.

Exploring the Curriculum

MSU-Integrated Laboratory School
Description of the Cooperating School This part presents the history of my cooperating school---MSU- Integrated Laboratory School. The vision, mission, goal, and objectives of the school are presented as well. General policies, rules and regulations of the school that every student, teacher, and the student-teachers must know a well-presented in this part.
Brief History of the School
The integrated laboratory school was originally known as the laboratory elementary school (LES). It was established on September 9,1964, to meet the educational training needs of the children and dependents of the faculty and employees of the university. Later a pre elementary education was created. Then the university BOR resolution No. 1522 Series of 1978 approved by the expansion of the education program with a four year High School general education. At present it is known as the Integrated Laboratory School (ILS). The ILS now performs two functions; as a laboratory school for the College of Education and other colleges and as a service function to the children and dependent of MSU faculty and other personnel
Goals
To provide and equip the pupil and students with the basic knowledge, skills and values needed to grow academically, spiritually, socially, and economically for the total development of a well-rounded personality.
Vision
In line with the university’s vision to be the premier-supra regional University in Mindanao-Sulu-Palawan region with the College of Education as leading teacher training, the ILS being the laboratory school envisions academic excellence and the development of a well-rounded person.
Mission
In pursuing its vision, the ILS proposes the following statements:
• To pursue relevant and responsive basic education.
• To prepare the students/ pupils academically, physically, spiritually, emotionally, socially and morally to whatever course they may pursue after highschool.

 To promote opportunities for the students to gain experiences in order to instill in them for appropriate specialization in the tertiary level.

Persons in authority

• School Officer- These include the Supreme Student Government Officers (SSGO) and the Philippine Military Training Officers (PMTO). They are models and leaders to be followed.
• Class Adviser, Subject Teachers and other Personnel
 Among their functions are to prevent students/ pupils from committing an on-going offense;
 Stop students/ pupils in doing an offense;
 Notify the concerned parents of any violation.
• Grade/ Year Level Chairman- Among their duties are implementation of school rules and regulations and policies.
• Guidance Counselor- He/ She disseminate information on ILS rules and regulations to new/ old students/ pupils. He calls counseling conferences of students/ pupils with problems and their parents.
• School Disciplinary Board- This is a Fact finding body composed of the year level Chairman, Class Adviser, Guidance Counselor, (SSGO) Council President, Homeroom PTA President, Federated PTA President and the principal.
Its Function is to investigate discipline cases that warrant suspension, dismissal or expulsion: it recommends to the principal whether to accept, dismiss or retain the students/ pupils.
• The School Principal- He/ She is the final authority and has the final decision on disciplinary matters in his/her department. He/she acts based on the recommends to the MSU President matters involving dismissal or expulsion.

General Policies, Rules and Regulations
• Assembly Schedule and Procedure
 No organization shall be allowed without a teacher adviser and permission of the director of the student affairs
 No organizational shall be allowed in the campus that does not have the objectives of fostering better relationships among students teachers, and other school personnel
 Any student organization, fraternity, and sorority including the Central Student Council shall register the University Administration through the school organization of director o the student affairs
 Only a confide student of a certain school is eligible for candidacy to an office in the student council
• Absence and Tardiness
 Any students who, for any un-avoidance reason become absent from class obtain an excuses slip from his guardian or from the guidance counselor
 If in the judgment of the principal , the student absence is not sufficiently justified , he shall refer the matter to the school disciplinary board, which shall recommended the appropriate disciplinary action on the student
 A student who, from some reason continues to be absent from the class for more than ten consecutive days shall even before his return , informed the principal of the cause of his absent
 A student who, without having been excused by the principal fails to attend classes for ten consecutive school days shall be marked “left”
• Reprimands or Referral of Misbehavior
 Assaulting the teacher
 Seriously injuring another student with bare hand or any other weapon or object
 Participation in school strike
 Ross immortality, and
 Participation in transfer or taking beverages an prohibited drugs within school premises
• Suspension for one year or for more remaining days shall be warranted for the following offenses:
 Carrying of deadly weapon, destructive , an explosive within the school premises
 Thief
 Cheating in class work and examination
 Insubordination
 Forging of school papers
 Cutting of school activities or work
 A assaulting another students
 Destructing of school facilities
 Injuring another student
• Suspension of a pupil/ student for five days or more but not exceeding 45 days/ 1 grading period shall be warranted for the allowing offenses:
 Unprovoked physical violence on the other student
 Slander an hour and ordering
 Confiscating/ destroying another’s personal belongings
 Causing unnecessary disturbance or distraction of school programs or activities
• Grading and promotion of student
The teacher evaluates orderly the grade of student through oral recitation, quizzes and examination. However, student’s grades are considered as what they only things he has learned.
• Some Rules and Regulations:
* No ID No Entry (for students and pupils).
* Wearing of Prescribe School Uniform (Except Wednesday).
* Visitors must log in at the guard house.
* Vehicles are not allowed to enter.
* Parents / Visitors are prohibited from staying around MSU-ILS premises especially at classroom corridors.
* Deadly weapons are strictly prohibited inside MSU-ILS.
• Health and safety
The school authorities are signed to guard health of the children while they are in school. Thus, they provide toilet, play ground, facilities, drinking fountain or canteen. Therefore, lighting shed is attended properly. The safety of children in school is worked by the teacher and all other school authorities.

Equipments and facilities
The school has the following; Library, principal office, guidance and counselor office, School canteen, mini gymnasium, water supply and comfort room, and other.

• List the procedures you follow to correct different types of student work (e.g., daily papers, homework, tests, projects, etc.)
I had experienced on checking a test paper, it has a two types of exam like identification and enumerations. My critic had given me the list of the answers on the tests. When I checked that test paper I used the lists of the correct answers given by my critic as my guide.

• List any time-saving tips you have discovered for correcting papers or recording information.
For me, the tips that I had discovered were first you must be familiar with the questions on the given test. And you should know the right answer or memorize the answers so that when you check a test paper it will be continuous.

PORTFOLIO ASSESSMENT

Currently, pre-service teacher education is using an assessment approach called “Student Portfolio”. This is an assessment approach that focuses on both the product and process. Ask your field study student to show any college subject material that refers to the use of portfolio for student assessment and share it with you. If you are familiar with the process and are implementing it in any educational environment, share that information.

• How is it different for traditional assessment?
- The traditional approach usually focuses on the quantity of correct answers. It often implies there is one right way to do a task or one right answer to the given question.

• What are the advantages of portfolio assessment?
- There are many advantages of portfolio assessment such as first, Promoting student self-evaluation, reflection, and critical thinking. Second, measuring performance based on genuine samples of student work. Third, providing flexibility in measuring how students accomplish their learning goals. Fourth, Enabling teachers and students to share the responsibility for setting learning goals and for evaluating progress toward meeting those goals. Fifth, giving students the opportunity to have extensive input into the learning process. Providing a process for structuring learning in stages. And the last one is providing opportunities for students and teachers to discuss learning goals and the progress toward those goals in structured and unstructured conferences.

• What are the disadvantages of portfolio assessment?
- If there are advantages, there are disadvantages also and these are first, requiring extra time to plan an assessment system and conduct the assessment. Second, gathering all of the necessary data and work samples can make portfolios bulky and difficult to manage. Third, developing a systematic and deliberate management system is difficult, but this step is necessary in order to make portfolios more than a random collection of student work. And the last one is that scoring portfolios involves the extensive use of subjective evaluation procedures such as rating scales and professional judgment, and this limits reliability.
• What questions do you have about portfolio assessment?
- Which is more effective to use? The traditional assessment or the portfolio assessment? Why?

1. What have been the most powerful insights for me about student reflection?
I think the most powerful insights regarding the student assessment should focus not only with their performance but also to their learning process to be fair on their part.

2. What procedures and systems of assessment do I feel best enhance student learning? Why? I think the fill in blank and essay type assessment will be one of the best to enhance the student learning because their cognitive aspect will be motivated because they will think of what are the best answers to suit on their questionnaire and they will analyze their answers.

PERSONAL REFLECTION ON THE PORTFOLIO

In making a portfolio you will learn and be able to explore the FS1 up to FS6 where the learner’s development and environment, experiencing the teaching, technology in the learning environment, exploring the curriculum, learning assessment strategies and on becoming a teacher. I have learned about the different characteristics of the learners, the roles of the teachers, the different strategies, the classroom management and tools being used by the teacher to his or her students. Based on my observations I can say that making a portfolio a student will identify the things that he/she must learn in the field of teaching. In making this portfolio, I had learned so many things and I do enjoy it a lot because you will be able to explore many things and most of all the school that you observed.

    Taylor Alison Swift was born on December 13, 1989 in Reading Pennsylvania to Scott and Andrea Swift. Taylor was named after James Taylor, her mother believed that if she had a gender neutral it would help her forge a business career.
