Making Ethyl Ethanoate
Making Ethyl Ethanoate

Alternative methods of production
To compare the effectiveness of producing ethyl ethanoate in the experiment I completed to other alternative methods I am going to use the atom economies.
Atom economy = molar mass of useful product/molar mass of all reactants *100.
Alternative 1
2CH3CHO CH3COOC2H5
This experiment would produce an atom economy of 100%, as there is one reactant making one product meaning there are no waste products produced. Although this experiment would be extremely efficient in producing ethyl ethanoate, it is a dangerous experiment to conduct therefore I would not recommend the company to use this method to produce ethyl ethanoate as the risk is too high.

Alternative 2
CH3COCl + C2H5OH CH3COOC2H5 + HCl
The atom economy of this experiment is 70.68%, which is a good atom economy however the experiment I conducted using a carboxylic acid and alcohol produced an atom economy of 83%. That means this experiment is less efficient than the one I carried out so it would not be beneficial for the company to use this method (alternative 2) to produce the ethyl ethanoate as there is a more efficient method to produce it.
Alternative 3
(CH3CO)2O + C2H5OH CH3COOC2H5 + CH3COOH
The atom economy of this final alternative is 59.4% which is the lowest of all 4 methods of production. With the lowest atom economy I would not recommend the company to use this method as it is the most wasteful meaning they would potentially lose a lot of money if they choose to use this method.

Following this experiment and investigation into alternative methods of producing ethyl ethanoate, I can conclude the experiment I completed was the most efficient, excluding alternative 1 which is too dangerous for the company to use as a way of producing ethyl ethanoate although it did have the highest atom economy by 17%. Therefore, I would recommend the company to use CH3COOH + C2H5OH CH3COOC2H5 + H20 as their method of producing

To synthesize 4-methylcyclohexene from 4-methylcyclohexanol the starting material can be dehydrated resulting in the desired compound. For dehydration to be possible the OH group on the 4-methylcyclohexene must first be converted into H2O by means of an acid-base reaction using a strong acid catalyst such as phosphoric acid and sulfuric acid. The H2O will then become the favored leaving group and leave on its own resulting in the formation of a carbocation in excess water. The water will remove the acidic hydrogen on the carbocation producing the desired alkene as well as regenerating the acid catalyst (fig. 2). A time effective way to collect the 4-methylcyclohexene is to heat the reaction to reflux as it is taking place. This allows the product to be separated from the starting materials by means of the boiling point discrepancy between the isolated alkene (101-102C) and the starting alcohol (171-173C). After the distillate is collected any impurities of water and phosphoric acid can be extracted by adding sodium chloride, drying the resulting organic layer with an anhydrous solid, and filtration. IR of both the starting alcohol and the resulting alkene can be compared as a means of identification and characterization as well as a Br2…

    3. One way the experiment could be made greener is to incorporate GCP # 1 (prevention), because “it is better to prevent waste than to treat or clean up waste”. In regards to this, there was plenty of unused solvent and reaction mixture at the end of the experiment, which is why initial amounts of solvent should be just enough for the 6 reaction samples and the infinity samples. This means that there will no longer be leftover reaction mixture and unused solvent which can be used for another lab section.…

This experiment was a study of protonating a cyclo-alcohol to become a cyclo-ene. In this case 4-methylcyclohexanol was protonated using phosphoric acid to become 4-methylcyclohexene. This demonstrates the loss of an alcohol group by protonation, the loss of a proton from the cyclohexane to form an alkene through elimination. This also demonstrates Le Chatelier's principle, by using distillation to remove the product as it is formed the equilibrium of the reaction will constantly be in favor of the product.…

We prefer the system proposed by the consultant. Because the flaw in the current system is that the system stands in a spending perspective, which allocate all overhead to all product at the same rate. However, some products are produced on simple labor-intensive equipment while others require very expensive automated equipment. Therefore it is extremely unlikely that all products consume direct labor and overhead in the same proportion.…

Do you know what is going to claim the increase in world consumption this year? Cars, not people. The grain required to fill a 25-gallon SUV gas tank with ethanol will feed one person for a year. The grain needed to fill that same tank every two weeks over a year will feed up to 26 people! Yes, there are places where we help satisfy hunger, but this food runs out! Not everyone gets to eat, and you are trying to take what little food we have for them and convert it into fuel! You must understand the consequences that this decision can bring.…

This experiment carries out a series of steps to carry out the Cyclohexanol Cycle. The Cyclohexanol Cycle is a multistep process that involves reacting and recycling the same product. Cyclohexanol is the starting material and ultimately is the ending material as well. The final step involves converting the cyclohexanol to nylon 6,6 (Dintzner 262). The experiment in its entirety was carried out following the major principles of green chemistry. Green chemistry is the philosophy of doing chemistry in such a way that reduces or eliminates the use and production of hazardous substances (Dintzner 262).…
