The poem, “A Birthday” by Christina Rossetti is a strong poem that uses many literary devices as well as describing how she feels when she found her lover. Christina Rossetti’s poem lets the reader know that a Birthday is not always what it seems to be, but a happy moment in your life. She expresses her feelings and emotions in many ways. People that criticize her writings have many good and bad things to say about Christina’s poem “A Birthday.” This is because when she writes she has the tendency to use many different tones to describe and explain her poems. Christina Rossetti’s poem does not mention anything about an actual birthday where one turns a year older. Instead the poem points out that a “birthday” is finding love and how you feel when that lover finds you. In the poem she mention that “My heart is like a singing bird” to exemplify the showing of how happy and grateful she is to find her lover. Many people today refer a singing bird as a loving, peaceful, and relaxed bird. Love is when you have a strong affection and emotions for that person, place, or thing. Christina Rossetti’s poem about love can relate to a birthday because both the poem and actual love, symbolize a very important and happy time in your life. Christina Rossetti shows her feeling and emotions of love by using similes and other literary devices. Christina Rossetti uses similes to express the emotions she has to finding her lover. In the poem she refers to “my heart is like an apple tree.” Christina feels this way because apple trees are usually big and filled with apples. The apples are also very sweet and that is why she refers her heart to an apple tree. Christina doesn’t state her heart as an open loving heart right from the start. She uses similes to compare what her heart feels about love.
