In the 1949 film I was a Male War Bride, Captain Henri Rochard and Lieutenant Catherine Gates are informed they will work together on a mission that their major, also a woman sends them on. He tries to fight it and get a new women partner, as they just got back from a mission that went bad. Her response to him is: “She’s your man alright.” Catherine asks him what the mission is, “to Keep your mouth shut and do what I tell you.” He responds. She has sly comments back to him, and doesn’t take his arogance. He is an arrogant ladies man, and she scolds him saying, “You chase after anything in skirts but lots of men can tell the difference you see, something you wouldn’t understand, it’s called love, you must have read about it somewhere.” Henri groans “American women.” They bicker right from the start competing for dominance.
They leave for the mission and the only transportation left is a motorcycle which requires a license over captain status. She must drive them, to defend his manliness, he laughs at her for wearing a skirt. She changes into pants with a confident smile, as he pouts in the side car. Their trip is long with multiple snafus along the way, where she continues to show her dominance, with her knowledge of airplane types, reading and speaking other languages. She yells at him that he is clumsy, slow and lazy. They arrive at the hotel where she is in major back pain and he rubs liniment on her back. He shows compassion as he gently pulls the blanket snug.
