Mall Social Experiment
We chose to conduct our social experiment at the Arizona Mills Outlet Shopping Center. Arizona Mills is located in Tempe, Arizona. Our experiment was conducted from 4:00 pm to 7:00. We chose this time frame to compare times of less traffic to the times after shoppers get off work. During the experiment the amount of shoppers increased from 1 shopper passing our position per minute to 3 shoppers passing per minute. The increase in shoppers happened close to 6:00 pm. We observed a mixture of social statuses to include white, hispanic, middle eastern, and black people. The gender variance was close with males usually being accompanied by a female. However, those that walked alone were mostly female. The shoppers walked comfortably though the Mall …show more content…
We started by observing the parking area of the mall. Two social scientist were posted half into the parking lot and the other social scientist posted by the entrance of the mall to observe the trash cans. For the hour that we observed shoppers entering the mall, we only observed a 10 people had trash to discard at any point. Most of the people used the trash cans if they were close to the them. There was only one person that dropped trash on the ground as they were still among the parking spaces. We found that most of the people that had trash actually used the trash cans and did not litter. We moved into the mall to observe the normal social behavior of discarding trash indoors. Our social scientists split up to observe trash cans from a distance. We wanted to see if distance from a trash can made a difference whether shoppers littered or used the trash cans. We found that every shopper observed used the trash cans in the mall. We found that it is the norm to use the provided trash cans in or around the mall. We also felt that people might be more likely to break this norm if the distance to a trash can is to far in their mind or if nobody is watching. But, we only saw the norm violation in the parking lot. Our group decided to perform our experiment inside the mall because it appeared that littering inside the mall would be the greater violation. We would violate the social norm of not littering by casually

Have you ever noticed that certain people act and behave differently when they are with crowds versus when they are alone? Being in a large crowd can really impact individual to act in a certain way that they seem to fit in with the group and sometimes do things more anonymous as it is in a large crowd. Both Zimbardo and Le Bon believe that bystanders are less responsible and more likely to commit violence than when people are alone. Philip Zimbardo is a psychologist and a professor at Stanford University; he researches the cause of evil in people by doing a Stanford prison experiment. Zimbardo states about how evil can cause good people easily by the peers that they are surrounded by and the culture and traditional way changes can affect people…

I did not notice anyone acknowledge a person in another group; there was very little, if any, intergroup interaction taking place on the pedestrian mall, despite the groups’ close geographical proximity. This was most prominent in the case of a panhandler, who seated herself at a bench directly across from me. She asked every group passing by if they could help her by giving any spare change. Although she was only seated there for a brief amount of time before moving on to a different location, every group that she attempted to talk to ignored her. Most diverted their attention somewhere else to avoid eye contact, and some even changed their walking path to avoid any interaction with her. Although a dramatic case, the lack of interactions between the panhandler and pedestrians symbolized the larger lack of interactions between any two differing groups on the pedestrian…

If a person was walking and fell scattering a handful of paper, then more bystanders should help pick up papers if they saw another person helping out, in comparison to no one assisting them, because of the social exchange and conformity theory. The social exchange theory is also known cost-benefit analysis or as utilitarianism, where people debate on whether or not their act of kindness is a costly or a gain for them in the end. Conformity can be defined when a person changes their behavior in order to satisfy a group norm. This hypothesis reflects the findings from the Kitty Genovese which exemplified the bystander effect; the phenomenon where if there are more people present, fewer people will be willing to take action. This experiment was an attempt to create a norm, since the behavior that was being mimicked was to pick up the scattered papers.…

With the technology we have today millions of people are on the internet daily, and mostly everybody has come across a “meme”. A meme is an idea or a list of consecutive behaviors in a culture that is passed from one person to another; therefore, from parents to children, social media, or even something learned in school. There are millions of different memes out there today. According to Bill Wasik the author of “my crowd experiment: The Mob Project” correlates on flash mobs. Flash mobs are social experiments where many people get together and do funny weird things to get a point across almost like a meme; flash mobs are passed from person to person to provide significance or a meaning to some source. Many memes can either be funny, realistic, or even expressing a want or need.…

I am not that social so this was a challenging project for me. I knew what my violation would be, it would be at least a little uncomfortable. Except for driving the speed limit. That “norm violation,” I do daily and get all kinds of reactions, adds entertainment to the fun of driving. Anyways, I chose to go to a Walmart which I don’t normally go to, and stood in line backwards. My three different trips to Walmart resulted in strange behavior from the audience.…

Social norms are customary rules that govern behavior within groups of people and societies (Bicchieri & Muldoon, 2011). These standards manipulate people to judge the appropriateness of their own actions in comparison to others (Corner, 2011). The push of the green movement begun in 2008, and this brought a reality check to the social norms that people were abiding by prior to the movement (Lallanilla, 2016). The propaganda of the green movement that floods society is not only a mindless advertisement but is a prime example of how social normalization manipulates people psychologically to consider their own actions and react in a particular manner.…

On the outside of the mall are lines after lines of cars are parked in the enormous parking lots. It is not that loud, every once in a while you hear the beeping of car doors being locked. Creative accents on the doors invite you to come in and enjoy. Different textures on the building pop out at you creating different lines. You go from flat to bumpy as move your hand against the side of the building. At night, the lights shines against the entrance making it easy for all to see.…

George Campus because it is located in downtown Toronto, where there are many people and also many intersections and therefore, pedestrians have the option of crossing the road. I picked this location because the St. George campus consists of people of many different socio-economic backgrounds, showing their different status. I will be looking for high status person jaywalking first and seeing if the people will jaywalk right behind the individual. By having a person jaywalking shortly after, the high status person because the model for imitating the behaviour. A high status looking person will be an individual who looks groomed, put together, and wearing items of clothing fitting the smart or business casual style. For men, this would include dress shirts, dress shoes, ties, and well-fitted pants. For women, it would include simple flats or low-heeled shoes, dresses, long or mid-length skirts, and blouses. High status women will also look groomed or fresh-faced. I will be conducting my observational study during the afternoon. I picked afternoon because there will be more foot traffic than in the morning but less than evening rush hour, which balances the inconsistencies. The type of data I am going to collect with be quantitative data, based on frequency of…
