After reading the mob mentality pieces, I conclude mobs thought it was okay to torture black people whenever they want to. To illustrate, Beitler’s photograph shows, a mob out in the open lynching two black people. Since they are doing the lynchings out in the open, the mob was not afraid of getting caught. Everyone in the picture are in their street clothes, so that could show they were okay with other people seeing they were participating in the lynching. Another idea that supports this conclusion is, in the article How Riots Work, the author points out, “Being part of a group can destroy people’s inhibitions, making them do things they’d never do otherwise ”(Edmonds). That quote shows people think it is okay to do an…

Group display in humans has been studied by a variety of psychologists both classic and contemporary. Psychologists such as Le Bon believe that crowd behaviour is explained through the individual taking on the ‘psychology’ of the crowd’. Essentially, the actions of a crowd can be explained through situational factors, such as convergence in one location, or the result of normless situations where people look to others to see how to act when norms of behaviour are unavailable.…

According to our reading, Albert Bandura’s social cognitive theory provides an interesting perspective on social media by concentrating on how behaviors are learned and enacted. One suggestion of the theory is that individuals learn by modeling, (the phenomenon of behavior reenactment), behaviors they observe or may imitate what they see vicariously on television, mobile phones, computers or online video games.…

We must first acknowledge the importance of studying the crowd to give light into how an individual has shaped through influence. Then it must also be considered what changes a person has made in order to conform to the surrounding social network. Lastly we have to monitor the internal conflict of personalities and evaluate the development of self through social interaction. All of these variables in crowd psychology will require more knowledge to fully understand and influence positive behavior/development.…

In chapter one the book “The Meme Machine”, Susan Blackmore introduces concepts, offers benefits and compares the idea of a meme to a form of imitation that can be related to everyday human life as well as the effects on given community. As humans, Blackmore believes that we can pass on ideas, stories and theories from one person to another through various forms of memes. She also explains how memes are similar to genes through the theory of natural selection in which only the strong, more important genes will survive. Throughout “Strange Creatures” Blackmore emphasizes the effect of memes on communities whether they are on the individual or macroscopic level and how they affect diverse communities.…

Through asking individuals what they believe the true nature of the crowd is, and what activities will surround this, recurrent themes have been found. Common sense accounts suggest that individuals within the crowd have heightened emotionality, which overrides intelligence, and therefore behaviour is much more instinctual and impulsive. In addition it is suggested that crowds are somewhat ‘primitive’, such that individuals are easily overwhelmed and influenced by agitators, and manipulated by their thoughts, intentions and actions. It is suggested that anything can provoke a crowd into violence, and a lack of self-control of individuals can cause the crowd to turn into a ‘mad mob’, an escalation to violence which can occur instantly, providing possibilities for anything to happen. These recurrent themes of common sense accounts of crowd behaviour had lead people to believe that crowds are irrational, indiscriminate and partake in ‘mindless violence’, however…

Lee also shows the real-life issue of Mob mentality. What is Mob mentality? It’s a group of crazy, aggressive people, with no sense. Their actions can sometimes make them believe that there is no consequences for how they have acted. An example of that would be if someone was in a group, and that group was vandalizing a building or even a sign. The one person might believe that they will have less of a chance to get caught then if they were acting alone (Smith). Listening to the NPR Radio Diaries they said that a lot of people took time out of there day to go down and watch the lynching. This is a big example of Mob mentality, because the citizens watching did not think that they would be caught viewing the terrible crime that has been committed…

In my words, a meme is an idea in the form of an image, video ect. that can be passed down from person to person through interactions and the internet. According to Dawkins he believes a meme is A meme according to Dawkins is a new replicator, a noun that conveys the idea of a unit of cultural transmission, or a unit of imitation. Dawkins also mentions that the word comes from the Greek root. An example he gives are tunes, ideas and clothes fashions. Lastly, Dawkins believe that memes have specific qualities including longevity, feculidity and copying fidelity. However the main question is how and what makes a meme so popular. In this essay I chose to talk about vampire memes. Vampires have been carried out for many years through different stories we heard and our fantasies which leads to our psychological thrill. Vampire’s memes remain so popular due to the history of vampires in American culture and through the media.…
