1.1 Every terminal illness will lead to end of life care, unless a sudden death or recovery occur’s, terminal cancer’s and lots of lung diseases lead to end of life care as the body degenerates, however mental disease can lead to end of life care, like dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and strokes as the damage to the brain will damage and cause the body to degenerate.
1.3 Symptoms of end of life care can and usually will cause distress and discomfort, as the general symptom’s are pain related, weather physical, emotional, spiritual or psychological pain the person will need a range of therapies, medicines, special comfort aid’s like hospital bed’s and air mattresses or oxygen apparatus, there can be many side effects to medications and those can cause distress and discomfort, a lack or diminishing communication and cause distress as you cannot ask for the relief you need.
1.4Many things are involved with how people perceive their symptom’s, such as mental capacity, learning disabilities, age , religion, profession and condition or symptom’s being suffered from.
For example someone who has strong cultural beliefs may have a different view on pain and medications or death and dying
If someone has a history with medical knowledge then they may recognise signs and symptoms
People may have low capacity due to dementia or learning disabilities and may not retain information or be able to recognise their symptom’s
It is also important (if in the persons best interest) that they know what their diagnosis is and what their likely symptom’s could be this is very important in helping someone to manage and prepare and also feel a sense of control / independence.
