Firstly, seat belt use should not be mandatory because seatbelt campaigns spend millions of taxpayer dollars that could go toward funds for causes such as schools and charities.
We pay taxes, right? And our taxes are supposed to go to the government to be spent on causes …show more content…
that help the population, right? Well, would you want your hard earned money spent on enforcing an unjust law?
Dr. Walter Williams states, in an article published September 10, 2003, " Under the Transportation Equity act for the 21st Century, the federal government is spending $500 million to aggressively enforce seatbelt laws."
Do you want your taxes to be spent on enforcing a seat belt law? Think of all the new textbooks $500 million would buy for schools. Think of all the charities $500 million would fund. Think of all the homeless $500 million would feed. Do you want that money to be used to fund a law that forces people to wear seat belts?
Second, not one penny of the said $500 million has been shown to prevent even one car accident, and has been proven to cause them?
William J. Holdorf stated that "because wearing a seat belt gives a person a false sense of security as promise by the government, studies have shown that drivers will tend to drive more recklessly."
Do you want your money to be spent on a cause that not only doesn't prevent accidents, but also helps to cause them? Do you want your money spent on a cause that can hurt or injure your friends and family? All that money being spent on a law that makes people act recklessly.
Lastly, being forced to wear a seatbelt infringes on our personal rights as Americans.
America is a "free" country. If a person chooses not to wear a seatbelt, it would be unconstitutional to force them to wear one. Everybody has the right to choose to wear a seat belt or not.
William Holdorf declared that there is a law that states anybody has the right to refuse any personal care device, even if the refusal would result in an increase in medical expenses. Seat belt laws violate the right to choose to use a seat belt or not.
Nobody should be forced to do something they don't wish to do.
Just imagine you get into your car and drive to the gas station to fill up your car's tank.
Since the station is less then a mile away, you don't bother buckling up. You see flashing lights and pull over. The officer writes you a ticket for not wearing a seatbelt, but you are unable to pay the ticket because of both the high taxes and the fact that your mother was hospitalized for burns sustained when her car caught fire and her seat belt trapped her in the car. Since you are unable to pay the ticket you are thrown in jail. Since you are the sole provider for your family, they do not have enough money once you are in jail and are thrown out on the street. Is that what you want? A police state where you fear your government? This is the world with seat belt laws. Seat belt laws infringe upon the liberty, the freedom, and the right to safety of the American people! Consider the consequences the seatbelt has had and will have if not
abolished.
