Having read the book The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, is a book of a young girl named Esperanza who lived in a unfortunate environment. Esperanza always Dreams of owning a beautiful house, one she wouldn’t be ashamed of, one away from Mango Street. Esperanza knew the lifestyle that most women on Mango Street had, a lifestyle she didn’t want to live. Esperanza grows older and starts to realize she has been delusional and becomes disappointed in her parents she knows that they will never move from Mango Street to the house of their dreams and now Esperanza makes it her dream. I believe Esperanza does not consider the house on Mango Street her home. Esperanza’s family moved plenty of times before owning their own house on Mango Street. It’s not the best house but it is better than apartments they’ve had in the past. Esperanza is still not satisfied with the house on Mango Street .She wants a big beautiful house like the ones on TV but this little red house with windows so small wasn’t good enough .Esperanza said “I knew then I had to have a house. A real house. One I could point to. But this isn't it. The house on Mango Street isn't it” (5). Esperanza wants a house one she can point at and be proud of. Esperanza early in the story states she wants to be an independent woman, she fears to be like most women in Mango Street nor does she want to be like her great grandmother, Esperanza says “I have inherited her name, but I don’t to inherit her place by the window (11). As Esperanza gets older she starts acknowledging many of the problems women face in her generation, it seems to be a passed down trend to get married have kids and stay in Mango Street forced by their husbands. Such as Rosa Vargas left alone as a single mother with 4 kids by a man who left without a word or Rafaela who is married and is not allowed going out. Esperanza
