Both these functions effect the social institutions that an average person may interact with in normal daily life. Manifest functions are functions in which people intend to do and have knowledge of the outcome going into the situation. Latent Functions are those functions in which are the unknown functions and are often the unseen consequences of a situation. Everyday institutions such as, family life, school life and religious life are influenced by both manifest and latent functions. Family life is the most basic of the social institutions. The most obvious of the manifest functions is to educate the future generations. The kids go to school and learn what is taught and hopefully retain this information as the continue on and get their diplomas. The next function is that of socialization. The family is the first institution of the five basic social institutions. It is responsible for developing the behavior of each person to be interactive individuals in society. It is responsible for supplying the basic needs of each person during their development. Unfortunately, the image of family has been deteriorated considerably. Instead of being a system support for people, it has become a double edged sword. Society is at fault for how bad the concept of family is today. It is just takes watching the news on television or to reading the newspaper to realize this. We can see headlines like "Father abused his daughter", “Woman is victim of domestic violence", "Child suicide due to family problems", among others. These are the many of the issues that top the news. For the journalist and social critic, Barbara Ehrenreich, families are dangerous. In her essay "Are Families Dangerous?” the author cites several cases and news about families to validate her thesis. I agree with what she establishes in her essay.…

Every human society is based on the family. The family is the smallest and probably the most fundamental social institution in the human community. There are rules that define family membership, lineage and inheritance as well as codes of behavior among the members. In every society the principles and the norms exist, but the reality is reflected only partially. Historically, the family was the most encompassing agency of social welfare to individual members of the group. Health care, protection (from the hostile external environment), education and training for survival, amusement and entertainment, production and consumption had been the functions performed by the family…

It is suggested that the structure approach to family is less important than the functional approach to family. Cheal defined the structure of family as grouping of system’s parts, such as the family roles of mother, father and child (Cheal, D. 2002:162). For the approach of structure of family, the kind of family members, the relationships, positions or roles, are consisted within the family and the members of family are interacted but the activities of the family or the consequences of their activities are not included. For instance, it included the main roles of the parents in family might be transited values to child, to let child get ready to go to school and provided food for them. Still, it tends to be insignificant for social scientists to challenge. Therefore, they emphasis on family functions more (Cheal, D. 2002:7).…

Family is supposed to be the foundation of values and guidelines for us to suit in society, but as time goes by we see the decrease of the accurate purpose of this affiliation. Nowadays, family is one of the main causes of the issues in society. Individuals behave just as they have been taught to and act with the values they have learned. Crimes among us encouraged by feelings like hatred, anger, or sadness are usually result of a bad foundation. However, this could be a relative problem, in where culture proposes a model of family. As an example, family in Asia can have a different perspective than family in America of how it should be consisted of. Nonetheless, they all lead to the same responsibility of guiding each individual along their lives to be the person they need to be for this…

When considering family systems, one needs to look at the broad frame of a family’s dynamics while simultaneously analyzing how each member of the family plays integral part in the family dynamic. Family’s, especially in the progressed world we live in, can be comprised of a variety of make up. When one thinks of family, one could typically define one’s family by the people the person was surrounded with as a child that influenced the child in their early years and continued forward into adolescence and adulthood. When considering the complexity of a family system, it is also important to analyze the member’s attachment to the other members. According to the article by Nims and Duba (2011),…

Robert Merton advanced the ideas of manifest and latent function. A manifest function is what people understand the purpose of a custom or practice to be and a latent function is an outcome that is likely not well understood or consciously identified by people. Merton emphasizes one doesn’t need to worry about which one is “real” or more important; all in all, the point is that social practices have multiple outcomes/purposes/function, and some people may not be aware of this. The sum greater than the whole.…

In my reading I chose to discuss the concept of “latent functions”. I chose this because this concept is very much related to my life and what I have experienced. Latent functions are consequences that unconsciously happen and are not intended to happen. In Korea we have presidential elections every 5 years and congressional elections every 4 years. I have had the chance to vote and I found it a great experience because some of family like my parents and grandparents did not grow up in a democracy. They did not have the rights that I get to exercise.…
