Manifest Destiny was a wide belief held in the United States in the 19th century, it was beliefed that American settlers were destined to expand throught the continent. Manitfest Destiny came from the idea that it was their job to reedeme the old world.
Mexican American War:
In 1846-1848 the first U.S. armed conflict fought on foreign soil happened, the Mexican-American War. The administration of the President, James Polk, believed they had a "manifest destiny" to spread across the continet, over to the Pacific Ocean. When the war was over Mexico had lost some where around one-third of it's territory, the U.S. claimed present-day places like California, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico.
Popular Sovereignty:
Popular sovereignty is the idea that the authority of the state and its goverment is made and sustained by the say of the people in the state. The consent the people give is said through the elected representatives.
Kansas Nebraska Act:
The Kansas-Nebrask Act was an 1854 a bill that mandated "popular sovereignty" -giving settlers the choice to decide whether slavery would be allowed or not. Making each state a pro-slavery state or an anti-slavery state. In 1793, the first Slave Act was put into place, this Slave Act gave the goverments the power to seize and return escaped slaves and had penalties for anyone who tried to help the slaves escape. The resistance of the act later led to the aprovale of the Slave Act of 1850 which gave more aid to seizing and returning run away slaves and made punishments for anyone who tried to help the runaway slaves harsher.
