I think Marshall wanted to show togetherness within the community. The time of year looks to be the spring. Many people don’t know that the spring signifies the season of resurrection, hope and joy, and the image all ties together. People in a community are supposed to be protectors of one another, they are to bring life and sense of joy to the community. If you look closely at the banner the two birds are holding, it say’s “Bless Our Happy Home” and above the entire painting the red ribbon reads “In My Mother’s House There Are Many Mansions”. A religious person who is a Christian would know that, the saying is from the bible “The Book of John “In My Fathers House…” It expresses the warmthness of being home and a place of guaranteed happiness.
The Civil Rights and the Black Power movement were main influences on Marshall creations. During that time African Americans were faced with tough challenges. The figures are extremely dark. Those images represents his look or perspective on African Americans outer appearance. Marshall was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1955, so he can pretty much know what it’s like to grow up in era where it was shunned upon to be black. I think that’s why he made the figures so dark.
